Rockola 464 lacks bass

by ken g » Tue May 21, 2013 4:09 am

I tried to serch the net about this and found nothing .

This jukebox sounded good after new needles but does not have much bass . I replaced all the weak caps in the amp and it still sounds the same , good , clear & loud .

Anyone have ''the fix'' to get more bass ?

Ken,
How are the speakers connected--any extra speakers in use ?

They are hooked up as original . The wires on the speaker terminals are on the highest watt screws . They are in phase . No extra speakers

Ken, that being the facts--is there a "cabinet speaker adjustment" on that amp ? If not, I would assume something other then one of the "weak caps", is wrong with it-- Ron Rich

No cabinet speaker adj. Their are other switches but they dont help .
I also thought of other problems but it seems a bit odd both channels do this and the amp cranks till it hurts ears .
Thanks for your help

Ken, using these schematics:

arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Jukebox/Rockola/Schematics/461-70.pdf

arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Jukebox/Rockola/Schematics/461-70a.pdf

Is the cart wired in-phase? These use a Shure magnetic cart. Is that what is in there, and does an ohmmeter test on it reveal roughly the same impedance on each channel?

Does the bass control have any effect?

R-O places all the loudness contour at the volume pot. Have those components been checked? Years back a friend sold me a Seeb Q amp that he could not get the channels to balance. One channel sounded louder-thinner. The caps in the bass section of the volume control had dried out and not been changed.

What is the physical condition of the woofers? I had a older R-o where someone had glued the edges of the woofers and made them so stiff they had little bass.

Try an external speaker of known tone quality and see how that sounds.

I went through this again and checked everything again and touched up some solders . It still sucks .
I got hold of another amp and did the same stuff to it and it sounds real good . It has bass now but not as much as other machines i have had here . It has enough to rattle parts on the cabinet though .
The other amp must have some hidded problem or that goofy looking multi wire capacitor soldered all over the volume control is bad . I tried jumping in caps across the caps on the tone board and that didnt do any good . To the parts pile with it .
