STD3 - Broken already!

Ok, So I went to look at this STD-3. Very nice unit, in very nice shape. A couple of "issues", like the right channel cuts in and out, like there is a problem with the volume control. I'm sure it's probably an amp rebuild or something like that. The machine worked fine. Coin acceptor, check. Scans, plays & rejects. Cool. I'll take it. By the time I pulled the truck around, he had unplugged it and had it by the door. Loaded it in (damn it's heavy!) strapped it down and off I went. When I got it to my shop. It would not scan or play. I noticed that there was still a record in the mech and the tone are was free floating. The mech is all the way to the left and the "start" & "stop" switches do nothing. Have I totally screwed the unit? or is there hope? I read the 2 manuals that I got with it (service & installation) and they don't help. Any thoughts or fixes would be appreciated. I'm sure I am looking at new needles at least.

Need more info--which "service manual" did you "read" ( Seeburg never published a manual for that phono--just a series of manuals, and "suppliments") ?
Is he DCC powered up ? Are the lights lighting ? Ron Rich

The two manuals I have are the "installation & operation manual" #81-458662 and "Stereo phonograph service manual"#81-459079. The phono manual lists the STD-3 as being covered. I do not know if the DCC is powered up, however, the lights light up, and I am able to make a selection. I will try to give you a description of what is going on. When switched on, lights come on and everything appears normal. When a selection is made, you can here a "click", but nothing happens. When you push the mech start or stop button, same click but no movement. There is a record in the mechanism and the tone arm is free floating. If you touch the needle, you can hear sound. The mechanism is over to the left by the 100 slot. Now, this box worked well before I loaded it in my truck. What happens to these if the power goes out when playing, because like I said in my other post, the guy just unplugged it and rolled it to the door.

Upon further investigation this morning (I have been away all weekend) I was able to get the record out, but the record pickup arm appears to be stuck in the magazine. By stuck I mean not moving. Could this be causing the non-scanning problem? Is there an easy way to reset the pickup arm?

I hate to ask--but how did you "remove" the record ?? Hopefully you did not damage the record lift arm ---
Is the turntable turning--if not, is the motor turning ? Is the record clamp-arm in the "clamped position" ?
If all above is "yes", refer to your service manual, find the " Detent release lever" and lift up--Mechanism should now scan--

Ron, thanks for your reply. I removed the record by lifting the clamp and gently pushing the record out. The power was off at the time. I will take a look at the manual and see if I can locate the detent release lever. How do i go about ordering a copy of your mechanism manual?

Well, I could not find the "release lever" in the manual. As a matter of fact, the manual I have did not even mention the mechanism. There was a lever that looked like it was designed to be pushed, so I did. It made a buzzing sound and then started to do what it was supposed to. It now scans and plays as designed. Thanks for your help. Now on to other "issues"....

You can not find that lever because you do not have a "Service Manual". You may have a "Service Manual Supplement" for that model, which should give you the correct manual needed to use with that "supplement"--Ron Rich
