Nicotine/yellowing of plastic.

by nline24 » Tue Sep 20, 2011 5:55 pm

Any opinions on the best way to remove this if it is at all even possible? I have read to stay away from chemicals but soap and water doesnt do the trick.

Thanks in advance.

Nick

Nick,
Well, I have been told, it's not "nicotine" that "yellows" anything. It's actually the "tar" instead.
What are you attempting to "De-yellow" ? Ron Rich

Some yellowing is due to the effects of exposure to ultraviolet light.

Sometimes you can remove some yellowing with Novus # 2 Plastic Polish and lots of elbow grease.

I've found that most yellowing can't be removed, as opposed to years of nicotine which can. As has been mentioned, it is usually light which causes this, it can also make the plastic very brittle so care must be taken when cleaning it.

Here's an example of what I am up against. In process of painting the cabinet so the yellowing really, really stands out on the bottom of the title strip holder. I am not looking for perfect but something that may lighten it up a bit.

See "DoghouseRiley's" post above--it's as "white" as it's ever gonnnabee--or it will be a "gonner"--

There are some tips online involving Hydrogen Peroxide, but I've never tried them, so I'd say, do at your own risk --

Overall I may give it a gentle scrubbing with some dish soap and water and see what that takes off. I don't want to go crazy with chemicals and ruin things for the future.

Thanks to all for their input.
