Rowe model 100K problems with sound

by kentmoore » Wed Mar 06, 2013 7:31 pm

Recently picked up this Model 100K. First 2 days no problems. Today I go to play it and lost the Left channel speakers. There seems to be no reset switch like the manual says to check. No external speakers are hooked up, only the factory installed. No overload lights are on. I swaped the right to left RCA plugs at all 4 locations and there is no change before the Amp. If I swap the plugs on top of the amp I can get the left to come on and the right goes out. Is there any way to troubleshoot this other than what the manual says to see if it is the amp or the equalizer? I don't have any spare parts for the K model, just parts for the previous makes. So swaping to see which it is, is a problem. I opened up the amp and no signs of anything burnt up. But this amp has base mounted resistors and so forth, so everything is very tiny to look at.

Kentmore,
IMHO, your first mistake, was "picking it up"--
The CD100K, is perhaps the worst one made-- I have seen three of those amps, go "up in smoke" --
There are a "ton" of modifications that the factory added, including a "kit" for the output transformers, which includes the addition of fuses. If that phono does not have the fuse kit installed, I would advise you to contact a Rowe distrib. and add it---also, just send the amp in for repair--you might get it back in six months---If you think it's worth doing--I don't any longer, at this point-- Ron Rich

Ron, Well i'm hooked on it for $650 so I need to do something. It looks brand new. I have a spare 250w amp from the model D, and also a spare for the Berkley. Can't I just rewire the K to accept the earlier amp, and do away with the pre-amp equalizer and seperate amp.

I would sure attempt that--but I don't know how much they "integrated" the amp and other electronics--I think doing that will at least generate "errors" as I know they did integrate the systems--
Do you have both sections of the service manual for that model--I'm missing one--?

Ron, Yes I have both.. The old style seems to have the exact same hook ups on the preamp, compared to the old amp, except the plug style is different for the channel outputs. The rest seems the same.

Try it ??
Let me look around here and see which half I don't have--if you will have a copy made for me, I'll sure pay for it and a little of your time--plus shipping, of course--

Ron, they came from the factory with 1000, but you could double it with an additional amp and T-pack... Rowe started using a solid-state, computer controlled pre-amp at this time. I have zero expeirence with them.

You both are corect. The manual tells how you can add the second unit to make it the 2000 watt unit. The amp in this box says "extremely cool" on it. I will try the conversion, but I would like to find a "gutted" box somehere and rob the plugs and mounts for the amp.

You could call a Rowe distributor if you have the part # for the kit??? Have we ever met in person?

John, If I do the conversion to the old style amp, I won't need the kit. Not sure if we have met or not. Maybe we should.
