rockola grand salon 468 jukebox advice please

Good Morning - from a pensioner
I am a complete novice and yesterday I purchased a Rockola Grand Salon 468 for my wifes 61st birthday ..perfect working order for THREE HOURS ...My wife wanted to put her own records in and I didn`t know how to do this ..So ...foolishly I played a record she wanted out of the jukebox ,and whilst it was playing I put her record in the vacant slot ...ie ..whilst 192 was playing ,I put a record in the vacant 192 slot ...then ...as the stylus lifted off at the end of the record - I quickly lifted the record out and the arm went over to put the record back ...I successfully done this 6 times ...but on the seventh time the arm jammed on the record on the record I had placed in the vacant space .....now ...the record cylinder wont rotate .....is there a simple way of sorting this out ???...by the way - my wife is not talking to me for breaking her 3 hour old Jukebox...HELP ...and also - just inside the jukebox on the left hand side is a black button - could someone tell me what this is for please ...

I would say that the breakers on the power supply(yellow and red buttons), need to be reset. Also you could loosen (three hex bolts holding it in place) the gripper motor that runs the gripper arm and wind the gripper arm back fully to its start off position, this should release the record, make sure to tighten the motor back into place.
To change the records there is a lever marked open-off-scan, use this to change the records, the switch in the open position is used for normal playing of records, the scan position which has to be held in position is used for scanning the record carriage and as soon as you let go of it the carriage stops. I wouldn't try changing records using the way you were trying as the mechanism is fairly quick and you could end up damaging records. When you have changed all the records push the lever back into the open position

THANK YOU SO MUCH ...I pressed the yellow and red buttons and it`s working perfect ....Sooo relieved ...thought I`d done a lot of damage ....you`re a star ....

Hello Allan,

Welcome to the forum.

Be careful of not getting your arm caught in that gripper bow on Rock Ola's it can hurt and does not do the jukebox much good either.

Your jukebox dates from 1977, I would try and locate a good Rock Ola engineer in your area or find a good roving engineer if you intend keeping it.

I do not work on Rock Ola jukeboxes but know several engineers that do, PM me if you want advice.

Thanks very much Alan ...a couple of things I would like to know if you might have the answer ...
just inside the Jukebox on the left hand side is a Black button - I thought it might be the reject button , but it isn`t ( or if it is ,it`s not working )
Also - where is the reject button ?
why can I only get Jukebox oil from America on e bay ?...do you know anyone in England that sells it please ...?
On E bay the Rockola Grand Salon 468 books - are they just sales pitch books or do they describe the jukebox in detail ... should I be looking for a Manual -( like a car owners handbook ?) if so - how is a Jukebox Manual described ...a lot of questions ,I know but as I say I am a complete Novice and would like to keep the jukebox oiled etc , as it should be ..what is the appropriate cost of a full service for a Grand Salon ?...it might be worth my while getting one to ensure everything is working as it should be

Hi Allen,
I will attempt to answer some of your questions--
First of all look above in the announcements section under "Books--parts--where to find" and you will find a list of suppliers that can sell you the Service Manual package, for your phono--I would advise contacting them and asking it the item they are selling is "complete" with schematics, and all "operating instructions", before purchasing.
As for "oil"--I recommend that you not purchase the eBay sold stuff--first of all, they sell it for "everything" as the "greatest"--IMHO, this is not possible ! Second, check the cost--it's outrageous ! I recommend the use of 20 wt. ND (electric) motor oil only--
Reject button--RockOla, as far as I can recall, never provided one inside the phono--just pick-up the tone arm and move to the end of the record. There should be one on the outside rear of the cabinet--however, sometimes the operator dis-connected this one to "prevent bar fights".

I strongly dis-agree with your oil recommendation. All "sewing machine oils" I have seen are much too light, and also do not mix with graphite grease, that was used in the gripper, and elsewhere in that phono. I also dis-agree with the factory reccommendation for "Aero Lubriplate", as all it tends to do is "gum-up", and turn to glue.

IMHO, after almost 50 years of "workin' on jukeboxes", full time, I have seen way too many of them "gunked-up". My partner and I ran the same model Seeburg in 26 locations "locally" for over 20 years (they demanded this cabinet), and never had one "gunk-up". Also, IMHO, operating these machines "domestically" is worse on the "lubrication situation". "Sewing machine oil" tends to be lighter, and tends to "dry up" sooner then does the 20 wt.
As I have pointed out before, when at Seeburg, I took part in an extensive, scientific, "oil test". The short story to this is we proved, to our own satisfaction, that the 20 wt. ND oil was "best"--
But, as you stated--"each to their own"--

Doghouseriley - you say you have a Rockola 468 ...what is the black button for just inside the lid in the left hand corner please ??

Allan: my 474 has this switch and it (sometimes) stops the mechanism when the dome (lid) is opened. Mech movement can still be controlled with the scan switch mentioned earlier. Patrick
