I would say that the breakers on the power supply(yellow and red buttons), need to be reset. Also you could loosen (three hex bolts holding it in place) the gripper motor that runs the gripper arm and wind the gripper arm back fully to its start off position, this should release the record, make sure to tighten the motor back into place.
To change the records there is a lever marked open-off-scan, use this to change the records, the switch in the open position is used for normal playing of records, the scan position which has to be held in position is used for scanning the record carriage and as soon as you let go of it the carriage stops. I wouldn't try changing records using the way you were trying as the mechanism is fairly quick and you could end up damaging records. When you have changed all the records push the lever back into the open position
