Well, it's the same movement when it is picking up or putting back.
Try taking out one of the records it won't pick up and putting it on the turntable.
Then select it. The gripper arm should go through the motions and the record should then play.
If on reject or when the tone arm triggers the mechanism of the gripper arm to put the record back, if it does, then in my opinion it isn't a problem with the gripper arm.
If the records are scraping when going back, then if the dividers are not considerably bent, then the basket isn't aligned properly with the gripper arm. That adjustment is at the extreme right-hand end of the main axle. See "Read Out Carriage Adjustment" in your manual.
