Seeburg USC1 - Scans twice but will not pick up records

by pcsnyder » Tue Jul 09, 2013 9:02 pm

I am new to the world of jukeboxes...

Recently purchased a Seeburg USC1 jukebox that played very well and selected records just fine. I recently bought a new set of needles for it. When I went to install the needles, I didn't realize it had service switches to move the mechanism up and down the track, so I made a selection and just flipped the power switch off when the mechanism was in a position so I could reach the needles easily. If I had known about the service switches, I would have used that method instead.

Needles were replaced and I was very careful to not bump anything else around. When I turned it back on and make a selection, it now scans twice and returns back to the starting position without selecting any records.

What I have tried so far:
Cleaning the RCA connector that goes to the tormat
Using a pencil eraser to clean the rivits on the bottom of the tormat
Used 3-in-one SAE 30 oil in the motor's oil ports

Anyone have other suggestions? Much Thanks!

Changing needles should have no affect on making selections--
Did you clean the Tormat rivets before or after having problems ?
I strongly suggest that you purchase, and read, the service manual and I & O manual prior to doing anything else--I would also think that my Seeburg Mechanism Guide, and my MicroLog trouble shooting guide should help--

Thanks for the reply Ron. I cleaned the tormat rivets after the problem started as an attempt to troubleshoot. I am wondering if shutting the power off after making a selection (before it picked up the record) would have caused something to get out of sync. I didn't realize that there were service switches to move the mechanism into a position where I could get to the needles easily, so I made a selection, waited for the mechanism to move far enough down the track then shut off the switch so I could reach the needles for replacement. Upon powering it back up, this is when the scan twice problem started. I will order your books too... thx!

Hello Paul. Scans Twice, Plays Nothing is symptom three of the four most common symptoms in broken Seeburg Jukeboxes. The problem could be from: 1 Write In; 2 Read Out or 3 Trip Circuits and it is a process of elimination to determine the cause and fix it. (or it could be a gray box problem which is beyond me).

The Seeburg USC1 Bandshell is one of my favorites - played mine today. Unfortunately official USC1 Seeburg Manuals don't give you the knowledge to work on many common problems with these digital Microlog jukeboxes. Ron Rich's Microlog book (and mech guide) are inexpensive and valuable tools to explain and troubleshoot your specific model. Suggest you get them from Ron as nobody is willing to loan a copy out.

Another useful website that explains Symptom 3 Scans Twice, Plays Nothing is Tony Miller's Website however unless you have Ron's Microlog Book, then Tony's explanation can be more confusing than helpful. Here is the website: http://www.west.net/~jay/fmillera/fmill ... ptom_3.htm

Regards- Mark

Thanks for the reply Mark. I am ordering Ron's books and hopefully I can get it squared away. It's a really nice unit and sounds great... looking forward to getting it back to working order.

Just worked on one.I skweezed the rca terminals just a hair so they would make better contact. The two in the back by the electric switch are the ones that caused this boxes problem.
I cleaned the tormat rivits first, but that wasn't the problem. It was as simple as the rca plug.
Let us know what you find out. It'll most likely help others.
I got Rons books as well. They are very helpful.
