Seeburg jukebox troubles

by highphono » Sat Oct 17, 2015 11:20 am

Hello!
I have an old seeburg Jukebox Seeburg SS160 were I have been working on.

My problem was as follows:

the motor scans perfectly but when I wanted to play a song, he scans towards the record, picks it up, but pushes it back as soon as the needle touches it.

A guy told me I had to de-assemble my machine, remove al the gummy oil and relube everything that moved.
That's what I did. (I didn't fully remove the clutch, maybe that's something I need to do...)

When i finished lubing, I wanted to try if everything still worked correctly (while my machine was still de-assembled) and then I found out that the motor can't even scan anymore... I also found out that when I pushed two wheels closer to each other on top of the motor, he would scan. That moment he would even pick up and play records! The only thing I had to do was keep this two wheels together while the motor was moving...

But there's more... when i re-assembled the whole machine, i thought that he would be able to play records (as long as i pushed those two wheels together) but that was not the case.

So the following problems remain:

-the motor will only scan if I push together two wheels
-the motor does not go to the record I asked for to take it

I really hope that someone can help me and appreciate any help you can provide.

Gill

ps: I can add some photos if you want me to

Hi Gill,
I do not understand what you are calling the "two wheels" that you "push together" ? Do you have the service manual or a copy of my "Seeburg Mechanism Guide" ? If so, please use the terms in the manual to identify these "wheels".
As for the clutch, yes--it will probably need to be removed and the pin that the #2 detent lever, and the clutch yoke ride on be removed, cleaned and properly oiled. Ron Rich

Hi Ron

I do have a service manual and I've looked up what wheels I mean.

I think that it's the Clutch Shaft Gear that I need to push against the Helical Gear in order to make the motor scan. If i don't do this the motor wouldn't move and the two gears just shove against each other.
The only thing I removed from the clutch was the Thrust Screw plate above the Thrust Ball, maybe I did something wrong here?

When I will be able to solve the scanning problem, I will de-assemble again, fully remove, clean and oil the clutch.
I will add some images as soon as I can!

Gill

You have something VERY wrong, if you need to push up on the clutch assembly in order that the two gears meet ?
Those should ALWAYS be in contact with each other ?? Ron Rich

I'm afraid that this is indeed the problem.

Before I started to work on it, it would scan perfectly, only when I re-assembled, the scan function didn't work anymore unless i pushed those gears together.

I don't understand because i didn't remove the clutch, maybe something fell in and is blocking the mechanism? Or is it possible that the clutch bend so the two gears can't meet each other?

It was also possible to push on the clutch so that the two gears didn't touch each other anymore, but when i let the clutch go again, the two gears would touch again, maybe i pushed the clutch too hard?

Hi Gill,
Somehow I am failing to understand what is happening--look at section7, page 19, and try to explain exactly where you are "pushing", or send a photo/video --

Hi Ron,

i understand it's difficult to understand my explanation, I'll try to explain it with an image.

I pull on the piece of metal that is connected to the clutch (arrow 1), in that way, the gear seen on the image gets closer to the other gear that is not seen on this image (arrow 2). Then the two gears touch each other and the mechanism starts to scan.

I will add a video as soon as i can (if still necessary)!

Gill,
It is my guess that the 4 screws that attach the clutch housing, to the main carriage casting, are loose(missing ?)--at least the top two are--no other way this can happen, that I know of-- Ron Rich

Gill, I agree with Ron that a loose clutch is suspected here. Here are two Seeburg clutch assemblies:

The four mounting holes are clearly visible at top and bottom.

Hello again!

I've been able to solve the scanning problem (it were indeed those two upper screws who were missing), thank you guys so much for helping me, my jukebox can scan again!

But now the initial problem still remains:

when I push a record code to play while the motor stands still, the motor starts scanning but it doesn't stop at the selected record, he just keeps scanning for a round or two and then stops.

This is the only problem I have for now (besides the fact that I lost my needle somewhere in the machine....).

Can you help me further?

Thanks,

Gill

Gill,
Do you have the Trouble shooting manual for this model--it works well in pinpointing the problem area.
If not, did you check all voltages ?

Hello,

I don't have a Trouble shooting manual...

The weird thing is that when I had my jukebox de-assembled to clean it, the motor would pick up and play the selected record. It's only after I re-assembled it that he stopped doing this.

I'm actually a real amateur in working on any kind of mechanism or electric circuits, but I'm willing to learn.

What do you mean by checking all voltages?

Gill

Gil, it is time for a manual. Here is one source:

http://www.alwaysjukin.com/items/servic ... s/list.htm

There are probably others online, some for free, but make sure they have legible schematics and hopefully, a troubleshooting section and full mech schematic. Like LPC series, these types play both sides scanning from one direction and can play A&B consecutively. They are thus a bit more complicated than the earlier and later models both electronically and mechanically.

I can scan and send original schematics, but if you are unfamiliar with the basics these might lead to tinkering more problems. Let me know via PM.

Rob, Gill,
The SS-160 model is UN-like the LPC models, in that it selects in both directions, and has had the "complications" of the LPC's removed (two relays, plus a second PA support in the control center). I pretty much explain this in my "Seeburg Mechanism Guide". If you wish to purchase a copy, please PM me--
