Happy New year

by Bobby Basham » Mon Jan 17, 2011 4:15 am

Hey, Folks.

Just here to wish everyone a happy, blessed and prosperous New Year. I realize times are a bit tight for some folks out there, but I feel ya. Let's pull together and pray for those who are going through foreclosures, repo's, laid-off and still unemployed, family and friends in hospitals in critical condition, and who knows what else.

The activity has been kinda low-keyed here. Maybe you all are playing with your new Maggies or whatever acquired over the holidays or spending alot of time with family and friends. If any of you picked up an old piece of electronic, share it with us. It ain't gotta be the top of the line Curtis-Mathis (which I heard years ago, from an old board, was made from left-over RCA parts), the most powerful Maggie on the planet, GE, VM, Webcor, Sears, Monkey-ward, or whatever. I'm itching so badly to hit the thrift stores, but have no more room for any consoles....but the suspense of what may be out there is killing me.

Three stereos in the livingroom, three in the kitchen, and at least two in each of the four bedrooms. Is Animal Planet going to start a stereo hoarder series? It's a shame how those animals live and their owners are in complete denial. Well, my (in house) stereos live a good life and they aren't mistreated...gotta love them...LOL!

Hey, if you've acquired any new/old phonos over the holidays, please share with us. This isn't just a "Maggie" room. There were alot of nice consoles back in the day, including alot of nice Mono units before stereo kicked in around 1957(?). I had many given to me as a kid, and threw them away. I could kick myself.

I, personally, enjoy sharing my acquisitions over the years, and am so glad that we can come to each other's rescue to resolve some problems and issues we may encounter with our beloved vintage and/or antique units. This board is great, sharing advice from our seasoned techs to the newbies asking those redundant questions a gazillion times before reading the archives (we still love you and still answer your questions) who want to learn more about that "piece" of furniture they've acquired.

Anyhoo, wishing a healthy and prosperous New Year to my fellow board members. I hate to sound like a broken record, BUT THIS BOARD MEANS MORE TO ME THAN WORDS CAN DESCRIBE, and I'm honored to be permitted to partake in its activites, with my little contributions on the side.

My posting is just a test at the moment, due to some lack of activity, hoping it reaches everyone, but it is sincere and I wish you all blessings, happiness and prosperity. I'm truly blessed, and this is not the Forum to share that. Just a few of the MATERIAL blessings below...the other blessings go way beyond these. --BB

Happy New Year to you Bobby and to all our regulars here.
Vinyl is disease which attacks that area of the brain desiring digital recordings. Once you catch it, you are cured.

I'd like to say Thank You all for tolerating me all these years, sometimes giving out inaccurate info, and I do apologize for getting alittle feisty and cranky at times, but you've all remained kind and civil, and that's greatly appreciated.

No new projects here other than gitting rid of alot of stuff. I've got Teac, Akai, Roberts, Pioneer reel-to-reels, Sansui, Marantz, Technics turntables, Wharfdale, Crown, Pioneer, Realistic and Electrostatic speakers, and a bunch of cassette decks. I'd like to keep at least one cassette deck to plug into each of my consoles...the bass is just too much to have a CD player sitting on one of those sliding lids. I'm not in it for the money, and alot of it is going to Good Will/Salvation Army.

I create enough drama for myself just living alone in this Huge house, but some of these electronics gotta go. In the garage, I still got two huge Astro-Sonics, two 70's drumtables, a GE lowboy, a blonde Tube Motorola, and some sort of Canadian console. All of these things could use a thorough cap job, and the more I look at them, the more weary I get.

I may gut one drum table and rig it as a companion unit/record storage to the first drum table. I think they have nice W800 series changers and a 20/40(?) receiver/amp. Notice the slight difference in the changers with the on/off speed selector mounted on the left or right. There's also a switch in the back to have it as a self-contained stereo or switch it to split the stereo signal between two cabinets. I think I will make this my outdoor patio stereo. I may have to put them on casters to roll in the house or keep them covered with plastic or something and keep it constantly Lemon-oiled. Arizona's dry weather and winter rains can be rather hard on wood.

I can't retire for at least another 3 years, and there are not enough hours in the day to cater to those ailing instruments. Plus, being a first-time homebuyer, I got a mortgage now.--BB
