Looking to Identify Electric Phonograph

by seanbarron » Tue Feb 01, 2011 6:56 am

I recently acquired a electric phonograph from a lady down the street. Having no clue about the thing, I am wondering if anyone here can help me identify it. Its General Electric, it has a model number on the back ar341aod. Have attached some pictures. Thanks.

You just identified it. What do you want to know about it? It's transistor for sure. Might require some cleaning and lube.
Vinyl is disease which attacks that area of the brain desiring digital recordings. Once you catch it, you are cured.

I agree that it's solid state and probably dates from sometime between the very late '60's to the mid '70's. Also, I don't think that Garrard changer is original. Every GE console that I've seen from this period had a GE built changer. Most likely, something major happened to the original changer and someone replaced it with this Garrard. The changer dates to the early to mid '70's.

The changer is a Garrard Model 1025 introduced in about 1967.

Generally, phonograph consoles or radio/phonograph consoles from the '60's and '70's are worth very little. Often, they are hard to even give away. I can't tell you how many I've parted out because I couldn't find anyone to take them. And, I recently bought 3 console stereo's from the flea market for $10/each. This was after they had sat there for ages and the owner figured out that he wasn't going to get the $75/each that he originally was asking. Personally, I have several pre-1970's consoles and I think they are great machines and I would love to have more of them; but, space will not permit.

I hate to sound like a broken record, the regulars know, but I can't recall paying over $40 for a console, some in very good condition. I've got at least 8 consoles plus portables up in the house, plus another half dozen in the garage.

Yeah, they're not worth alot of money, but they're nice to have around. Four bedrooms, livingroom, kitchen, family room, hallway...the place is full. Gotta figure out a way to get at least one small Maggie/other portable in the Guest bathroom. The oval tub in the master bath is too small, so on occasion I like to soak in a "normal" tub in the 2nd bath. I am so tempted to go out to find some more but I'm beginning to feel like one of those animal hoarders in denial on the Animal Planet station. This hobby requires alot of room, and the only way around it is start hanging stuff on the wall (yeah right, a 150 lb Astro-Sonic mounted on a wall). There is just no more room. --BB

Now, Ron...

You know that the piano and organ are a a crucial part of my essence. The piano is 15 years old (barely played) in Mint condition, I purchased the organ back in 1978 from a rock band member, plus a new Yamaha to replace the first one I sold to the church. The piano may still be worth at least $30K in excellent condition. The organ may be less than $1K and Leslie, over $500. A new Leslie is about $2,500 (last time I checked).

If I start adding more Maggies, the place will look more like a showroom/warehouse than a home. It's time to scale down from all the recording equipment, PA systems, a gazillion speakers, mics & stands, equalizers, etc.

I've got some nice stuff, but most of it is going to the thrift stores/salvation army. I don't want to deal with folks on Craigs List, running to UPS, packaging stuff, paying big bucks for shipping, etc. I just wanna let it go. I didn't pay big bucks to begin with, and I'm not looking to sell anything for a profit right now. --BB

Mic stands, I'm having a hard time getting one of the old good heavy chrome mic stands. Folks must have dumped them real quick in favor of the black ones.

I had to take another look at my mic stands. All of mine are black, and I bought those from Musician's Friend catalog. BUT, I forgot that I had 4 chrome mic stands with booms from Radio Shack. They must be over15 years old. Just to check, I went to Musician's Friend and Radio Shack websites and all their stands are black.

Ya know, maybe I should get a hobby that doesn't require so much square footage...what do y'all think about an Ant Farm? LOL--BB
