Another tube Question

by 1958zenith » Thu Mar 08, 2012 8:15 pm

I found a few good 5y3 gt tubes for sale on e-bay, can anyone tell me what the test numbers mean, and are the so called black face tube better than the gray?

My own personal opinion--"beauty is in the eye of the beholder"--or in this case "goodness is-----".

5Y3 is a rectifier tube.
It plays no part in an amp other than rectifying AC into DC.
AudioPhools might think otherwise and even state it "has a certain sound".
Yeah, alright, sure it does.

Matt,
Izzat the "warm tube sound" that I have only heard "people" talk about ? My ears were never good enough to tell "tube sound" from "transistor sound"--and they have become even worse now--- Ron Rich

Haha Ron!
Indeed tube amplification has its merits, but not to the point of being some unearthly presence that audio fools think - it's all in their meazily minds.
But, alas, when others say it's so, it must be so....
