Magnavox Turntable - No Power Issue

by troy b » Sat Aug 09, 2008 5:14 am

I recently purchased a Magnavox turntable from around 1973 - 74 with the EV magnetic cartridge. It is in excellent condition - no marks on the wood base and the lid looks great too. For some reason it won't power up. Is there a common issue with this production of turntables that can easily be fixed?

I know a few problems that you might look for:

- The power cord plug under the turntable might have come loose.
- The power switch actuating link might be bent.
- The power switch might have failed.
- The motor might be getting power, but needs lubrication.
- The idler wheel rubber may have rotted away. The motor spins, but doesn't drive.
- The idler wheel might be slick from age. Use Caig Cailube RBR to rejuvenate it.
- The grease on the idler wheel jockey arm might have congealed to the point the arm does not move in under spring pressure.
