Gordon, if you haven't already, I suggest rebuilding the lowDC power supply with silicon diodes and a new cap. Pin cancelling occurs while the gripper motor is running and even though it is now AC, there is still slight drain from the relay that operates it.

I have only original service data and nothing details cleaning of the pins. On the H, I and J models as well as one Continental soaking and working the pins immersed in diluted floor stripper and hot water was enough to get them back as-new. On the first continental the entire wheel was caked in some sort of white grease that had hardened so all the pins had to come out and be treated as above. First though the grease had to be softened in boiling hot water so that I could get the pins out -a real P-I-A. I'd paid only $75 for it because the previous owner was in over his head (so he said) but it was otherwise intact.

This is a pic of it in my dealer's showroom:

Thanks Rob,

Yes, the pins are difficult to clean. I have been having some success by gently rotating them with pliers after spraying with alcohol (the alcohol is for me, not the pins-----ha ha).
I am surprised that the pins catch the selector as it rotates as they only sit up very slightly.
As I said before, the pins have a very greasy, sticky feel about them. I need to find something to dissolve the grease (I never thought of floor stripper).
Thanks to you and Ron for your advice, I was looking for problems elsewhere.

Regards

Gordon..

Gordon,]
I found a ref. to the pins/springs in the H-I manual--About all it says that's use full is that the pins must be "properly reset" with 100 volts line voltage and that the friction should be 275 grams ( slightly more then 1/2 lb). There is a note that says "-recommended --whenever possible, a new friction spring be installed each time one is removed--"--So, IF you remove those pins/springs, be X-treem-ely carefulllll ~
(BTW, I am 100% sure they were intended to operate "dry") Ron Rich

Thanks,

I spent some time cleaning the pins with spray contact cleaner.
After giving the pins a good spray I worked them back and forth many times.

It appears to have solved the problem as I played about 100 records without any 'ghosts'.

Thank you

Gordon..

Hi Gordo,
Well, hopefully the "contact cleaner' you used was a "safety solvent" type that dries totally--no residue. If so, you probably "done good", if not, I would bet you'll be re-cleaning them SOON ! Ron Rich
