AY 160 WONT CREDIT

by NAPA09 » Sat Jan 03, 2015 7:19 pm

Thanks to the forum I got 2200 out the shop and now have working on an AY, when closing the coin switch the plunger will move up and lift the contact in the pricing unit but thats all it will do.Any thoughts where to begin? I had the tormat rebuilt by a vendor on here so I guessing that is ok. i've also looked in the troubleshooting manual and thinking I'm missing 25 volts

Which "AY-160" model do you have ?
You had the "Tormat" re-built ? Ain't no re-building them(??) ! Also, the Tormat, has no relationship to pricing.

Sorry Ron,I guess it's called a memory unit, after my post I went out and can make it work if I hold both buttons down at the same time although it still won't credit or the credit lite will not come on Thanks Ed

Please-- Read "Attn Newbies" above, and then the Service Manual, so I can understand what you are attempting to say--
Also--answer questions--still need to know which model AY 160 it is--

Ok Ron,I think I got it this time.It is a AY-160--SH2 with a single pricing unit CODE -C It has benn reworked to credit when the coin reject button is pushed. Thus the coin mech assembly is missing. When closing the coin switch I hear a buzz sound and looking I see a plunger moving up and pushing up a tab.
After that I can push both buttons and it will play the selection however the buttons will not lock in and the credit light doe not light Thanks again Ed

Hi Ed,
"Someone" has apparently cut, or somehow dis-abled the latch bar solenoid in the TES. No telling "why", except to guess it "caught fire", which is common when phono is in home use--credits left "on", for periods of time. Lamp (#55) is wired directly to the solenoid, so that wire is probably cut too- see service manual schematic, and repair it--probably will need a new solenoid, at least-- Ron Rich

Hey Ron, may have made some progress today found a broken wire at pin 11 of J391going into the pricing unit.I now can credit and play but the cancel solenoid in the SPUI-H won't energize so it will only credit a time or two . Still no sound and reading the manual it says 5u4 should be lite and it's not. Can this have any effect on my problem? Tks Ed

You have me in my normal state of confuzzion--"Credit", is to add the ability to make a selection--"Cancel is to reove that ability--so, if you can make a selection, after having inserted a coin, or used the service switch to "establish credits", then the cancel solenoid HASTABE energizing ! - How many selections are you getting per coin--note: the SPU pricing units do not "accumulate" any credits--each coin is set for a fixed number of credits, and can not add more, then what it was set for, at any time.
5U-4 tube should light when the motor is running--check the (suppose to be) 2Amp, sloblo fuse--if blown, the tube (and maybe other "stuff") is bad ! Do not replace it till you determine, and fix, whatever caused it to blow--

Sorry to confuse again, I found that the snap switch was not closing to cancel on the L -V side .All is working now but when scanning it sounds like the amp(which was a bad tube) is making a machine gun noise when moving back and forth as it moves across each tooth.I'm guessing that the mute is not adjusted correctly. Possibility exists that it is not correctly muted, or a ground going to the mechanism, or amp., is (partly) open, or that the read-out-plungers/detent switch are badly "adjusted". Ron Rich

Hi Ron, the noise is coming from the detent sw when it scans on play but not if I scan with the scan sw. What is the purpose of the the detent sw? Looking at the schematic I can't see what it does. Tks Ed

Hi Ed,
It is the "timing switch" for the read out plungers--prevents early ware-out of them, and the Tormat rivets.
If the service switch is in the "off" position, there is no read-out voltage, thus no "noise"--
See the service manual, or my Seeburg Mechanism Guide, for proper adjustment proceedures.

Thanks for update Ron,I'll double check the setup of the detent,I have found that the noise is coming from channel 2 by pulling tubes .

If that's the case, I would guess the mute switch for that channel is not working??
