Comments request : Why do I have to stretch this spring ?

Good day,

This forum is always very helpful, so I submit this to your attention. Why do I have to stretch this spring so much for the idler wheel to spin along with the motor shaft ? I did ordered a proper replicated spring, this is the one you see on the picture. Any comments, suggestions, observations will be appreciated.

Note : It does work but I have a fluttering sound which I think has to do with the worn idler wheel rubber not seen here.

If the correct spring is used, you should NEVER need to stretch it at all, for ANY application----this is what causes all types of problems. In this case, I believe, ( going from my great--but not too long memory), you have hooked the end of the spring to the wrong place ! I THINK the spring should hook between the idler wheel slide, as shown, to the "hook" shown, that you have two turns of the spring wrapped to ? You will need to order a new spring--L@@K at the parts book, and hook it correctly. Idler wheel if rough, can also cause problems--get it re-surfaced, or purchase a new one--suppliers of both, are listed above. Ron Rich

Ok. I removed the stretched spring, took another brand new one and attached it like it's supposed to and put the turntable on.
Works great. I am amazed.
I thought that I had to see the idler turns BEFORE putting on the turntable. I am a newbie

On the picture one can see that the spring still has to be attached to the idler wheel slide.

This is a problem solved.

I'm wondering if you have the wrong idler. If so, I may have one.

The un-stretched spring only causes a gentle pressure of the idler on the motor/platter rim when in use.
That's usually all that is needed, as long as the rubber tire, motor shaft, and platter rim is clean and dry.
Of course the idler tire MUST be pliable, not hard or glazed, or with "dents" or dimples.
You don't need a mountain of tension on a properly serviced idler arm assembly, so forget about stretching springs.

Interesting Eddie, I believe that the rubber on my wheel is a little thin.

And I've been sent this new one : The hole is too small for the spindle ...

I have the spring in place the right way, this works great now. I thought I had to see the idler turns before putting the turntable on ....
