Seeburg USC2 Now playing selection lights go out

by Torin » Tue Oct 21, 2014 6:15 am

I have a newly acquired Seeburg USC2 that has two problems:

1. The now playing selection lights go out as soon as the selection starts playing. The lights work and scan through and light up the selection but then go out when the selection starts.

2. It won't play anything with a zero. As soon as the zero is pressed, it resets the selection process. I will look at the contacts on the keypad for starters.

I have the service and parts manuals. Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Torin,
The usual reason for this type, of selection playing lamp malfunction, is the phonograph has been transported roughly, or on it's back, without the proper "shipping thumb screws" installed. What has happened is the "contact fingers" that touch the selection now playing contact block, have been "bent". It MAY be possible to re-adjust them upward, as per the Service Manual, or, you may need to "reform" them. Be extremely careful in doing so, as once "kinked", I find it impossible to make them operate correctly--
Also-There should be a "shoe" added to the outside corner of the cradle assembly, that prevents "tilting" the carriage assembly--I included a photo of it in my "Seeburg Mechanism Guide", and I think, an explanation of how to adjust it (.03-.05 clearance between the shoe, and the rail).
The "0 reset" problem, can be anywhere from the small PCB, on the rear of the DEC, thru the DCC, to the DTP. Wires/ plugs are suspect, as well as the components. This will need to be sorted out, using the service manual, or, my "Seeburg MicroLog Trouble Shooting Guide". (should you wish to purchase either, or both, of my guides, please PM me).
ONE CAUTION--while working on the reset problem--un-plug the AC cord for the DCC !

Well, I was able to get the zero working. Cleaned the edge connector on the small pcb.

However, with the selection lights going out, I looked at my manual and unfortunately, it is the supplemental USC2 manual and doesn't have the diagram of the contacts. I'm going to go ahead order a USC1 manual. In the meantime, Ron, can you tell me where the "selection now playing contact block" is that you are referring to for the light issue? That would give me a place to look anyhow.

Thank you

Torin

Hi Torin,
That's exactly why I tell people to buy their "service manuals" in package, from a "legit" seller--these guys know what is required--
The contact block for those lamps is on top of the mechanism--but I really think you should wait for the manual, as it can be difficult to adjust them correctly, even with the manual---Ron Rich

Thanks again Ron. Yes, I will wait for the manual before adjusting those. The supplemental manual is all the guy had when I bought the jukebox. I'll order a good set from your recommendation.

Ok, I've ordered the USC1 service manual and will adjust these contact accordingly but I have a couple of questions while waiting:

1. I was able to get a look at the "contact fingers" that touch the contact block and they are curved. Does this mean that they have been bent? They both look like they are supposed to be curved but are they supposed to be dead straight? Thankfully, they don't looked kinked though.

2. Also, they appear to be very difficult to get access to. I guess I am supposed to remove the contact block to gain access?

Thanks again!

Alright, alright! I'll wait! I'm not good at waiting.

In your response though, I can't tell if you meant if the contact fingers are supposed to be curved. Sorry but it's a bit confusing in that post. I guess the manual will show if they are curved or not. Thanks!

Well, I fixed it. It was just that 1/2A fuse that was blown on the selector unit. I metered it earlier and it tested good but upon closer inspection, it had to be removed and measured. Dumb but easy. I'll take that anyday.

Now, it is just down to a couple of tweaks here and there. The # 2 (first digit) lamp isn't getting any voltage and some of the other bulbs work intermittantly if I wiggle them. Bad contacts or should I be looking elsewhere.

Can I replace 1819 bulbs with 1813?

Thanks again. I'm still glad I've got the USC1 service manual on the way, I'll need it.

So close!

Torin,
NO! NO! NO. The 1819 lamp MUST BE ONLY-- 1819's---!!!!!!!!!
The 1-2 lamps on the selection playing display are controlled by a switch on the side of the tone arm carriage--
Run a jumper to all of the number 19's from the one wire there--they stop making good contact, after "someone" twists that plastic housing (which lost it's protective cover the first time it was removed).

Torin,
I try--I could be much more "helpful" to you if you purchased, and READ, both of my Seeburg Guides--
