Magnavox Automatic 400 Turntable?

by ry4wn » Sat Apr 07, 2012 12:08 am

I have been looking for a nice vintage Magnavox turntable for my entertainment room, I have some concerns however. I cannot locate any documentation about a Magnavox Automatic 400? I found one at a good price but I am concerned about performance, has anyone ever heard or seen this turntable?? The one in reference if it matters is on a site I’ve never heard of before - http://snasy.com/productdetails.php?productid=21

A good price? Are you sure? Go to an auction and you can pick up something much better for about a dollar. Yes, I am serious. I see them go for that all the time and I have bid on and won many for a dollar. Magnavox is a very good brand but that is a little steep in my humble opinion. Also consider whether you buy this one or find another vintage piece that it will need to be serviced ie; new capacitors, cleaning and lubrication etc. preferably by an experienced tech.
Vinyl is disease which attacks that area of the brain desiring digital recordings. Once you catch it, you are cured.

What sort of "documentation" is needed?
That system is merely a casual-listening tabletop stereo, nothing special about it.
Basic record playing unit.

And those Magnavox minichangers had a ton of issues when new. Magnavox wound up installing Philips mini changers and BSR mini changers in these. Get an older upper end model with a full size, reliable, good Micromatic which Collaro made if you want a Magnavox or get one of the consoles with one.

There are two 400 models. The M400 is a Collaro Conquest with different knob linkages.

Amazing how NO one has invested a moment to check out the OP's photo link, to see WHAT is being talked about.
This results in wandering way off on another planet as usual.

Some of these numbers never made sense to me until someone pointed out the number on that center metal piece on the platter. My W621 changers are all labeled "Micro-Sonic 90 Ultra-Tracking Turntable", while other models may have Magnavox Micro-Matic or nothing at all.

That turntable is very similar LOOKING to a model W615 (SAMS Set 864, Folder 8 ) with the exception of the speed selector and control lever.

When you say looking for a "vintage turntable", are you looking for a turntable only, to hook up to an existing setup, or are you looking for a complete, self-contained unit? --BB

Until today, I was unable to open the picture. I got the spinning black ball in the browser tab that never ended. Today, it worked after about 5 seconds.

Damn, I need glasses...

That looks like on the line of a W620 turntable in the pic, not the one that I posted earlier. Sorry.

Bobby,
Just walk out of your house in either direction, and I'm sure you will find a "drug store" on the corner ( I have NEVER seen any place with more "drugstores" then Tucson). Once there, have one of the friendly clerks lead you to the "eyeglass rack"--pick up a pair, and you will "see, what you've been missing"---

Ron,

I have several pairs at the house, 125+ mild strength and at least two at the office. Can't see a darn thing up too close, but can sure read my bank statement about 6 feet away...LOL! I usually keep good track of my glasses but sometimes lose them until I accidentally sit on a lost pair after searching high and low. --BB
