Rockola 490-1 Arm Won't lower onto record

by Fantom3993 » Fri Sep 21, 2007 11:55 pm

I'm going to be looking at this jukebox later this afternoon. I know NOTHING about these machines. What I was told is the cause is unknown, but the playing arm doesn't lower down onto the record. Is this a common problem? Has anyone experienced this? Easily fixed? Any help is greatly appreciated.

First see if it has a positive tracking force. Replacing the cartridge with a lighter one may have left the arm counterbalance lifting the arm instead of reducing its weight (as it is supposed to). Be sure the force is correct for the cartridge installed.

There should be a lifting pin or arc that raises the arm. Often the pin is inside the arm shaft. Check to see if it is actually lowering. Often it gets gummed with worn-out lube, and sticks in the up position. Otherwise, check the levers and cams to see if they are actually moving to the position that lowers the arm.
