Sound issues on model#414 Capri 2

by Raven65 » Tue Aug 31, 2010 4:06 am

Just got the mechanism working great. The sound has a lot of
Static. The volume, bass, and treble knobs static when
Turned. Is this amplifier related, capacitors and
Such? Volume will go high, but quality is poor.
What to check first? Don't know much at all about getting
Into the amp. Appreciate any replies, raven

The controls are dirty for one thing. De-Oxit or electrical contact cleaner spray should get rid of it. Spray the control where the wires come out of it, it's usually the only place you can access the inside of the control, move the control back and forth, and spray it again. It also seems that you have other electronic problems, most likely capacitors, especially the filter capacitors at the minimum. The amp is telling you it needs to be rebuilt. I would not run it in this condition. Tube or solid state?

Get a service manual with a schematic as soon as you can. Always Jukin or Vern Tisdale are a couple of sites to check. There are sites that will rebuild your amp if you wish. I believe Ron Rich does Seeburgs but I'm not sure if he works on all brands. He will probably answer shortly. Antique radio electronics, at least the amplifier sections, are quite similar, so you could look for a book on how to restore radios also. If you understand electronics, they are not difficult. If you don't, you need to learn how. It's not that difficult but you really can't do it overnight. I would buy a cheap old tube radio and practice on that, before you attempt to do anything to this or strongly consider sending it out to be fixed. Tubes can always be an issue but capacitors and possibly some resistors, especially the power supply filter capacitors, are the usual culprits. Tubes do burn out or get weak, but they are very tough considering what they do and in many cases, it's surprising how much abuse they can take. Did you happen to notice if they were all lit and did it look like any were overheating.

Thanks Greg, good idea on fixing up a cheap radio first.
I'm kinda catching the bug on this stuff.
And will keep learning about it. Thanks, raven
