Can a Seeburg SMC1 live after being moved incorrectly?

by sturgeob » Fri Apr 26, 2013 6:26 am

I recently purchased a couple of classic jukeboxes at an estate sale. One is a Rock-Ola 460, circa 1975 and the other is a Seeburg SMC1 Disco, circa 1979. I wasn't around when they were moved but I was told they were both moved on a furniture dolly tipped back. Anyway, I started looking at the Seeburg and it does nothing but light up. I can get the mech to slowly travel to the end of the run and back but it won't play or try to select a record. I was told by someone that there is a tip protect feature built in that needs to be reset from the keypad to place it back into normal operation. Is this a true statement? This will be my first foray into jukebox world so I am blind at this point, total newbie. I an electronics technician and building automation design engineer, so troubleshooting is not an issue. I just don't want to do something wrong right off and not know it until later. I did buy a complete operation and service manual for the Seeburg so I have reference to work with but I would really appreciate a starting point or sage advice if anyone has some to share. Thanks, Bob from Kansas.

Hi Bob,
Welcome !
As I am NOT a "Diplomat", I will attempt to word this as "nicely" as I can--
Your "someone" who is giving you advice is crazy !
Yes--Seeburgs as well as all coin operated phono's can suffer major damage, when not "bolted for shipment" ! However, the SMC models are probably the MOST "forgiving" in that respect.
I have been "involved" with this model since pre-production. I used to repair the electronics used in them, till about three years ago, when so many of the parts needed became no longer available. At that point, I, along with two other people, collaborated to come up with a total replacement MCU , using modern parts. We simplified the three boards (aprox 40 IC's--depending on MCU version) in the MCU down to one board (two IC's), keeping all of the "features" of the originals, and adding some new ones. If you, or anyone else is interested in a new MCU, please PM me--
I still repair all other parts for that, and many other phono's.
I would guess that the problems you describe would be most likely in the MCU and / or PCC interface board. Ron Rich

Thanks Ron. No offense taken. I have learned to take statements like my friend/neighbor made with a grain of salt. I look forward to breathing life back into this metallic slice of history! I sent you a PM but wanted to let you know in the post that I look forward to hearing more about your retrofit board. Thanks again, Bob Sturgeon

Hi Bob,
Got the PM--don't know exactly what you need to know about the new MCU--
I am not a "salesperson" either ! It totally replaces the original MCU--and functions much better then the originals. It allows all of the same "features" to be utilized, with a few "improvements" --like for instance--"true free play", "true random play" with set-able times ("0" to 99 minutes between paying times), and side selection ( "A", "B", or "AB"). Also now includes some "diagnostics". It also eliminates the need for batteries, of any kind--
