Daily Rant -- Restoration Hardware Ipod "Gramophone"

by Joe_DS » Fri Oct 17, 2014 5:32 pm

I got the Restoration Hardware holiday catalog yesterday and noticed this:

Note to Restoration Hardware:

THIS is a "Gramophone" --

THIS is a Magnavox Horn Speaker:

It's true that a Magnavox (cygnet style) horn speaker COULD be used as a speaker for an electrically amplified phonograph, but most were used with radios.

It could also be argued that the cygnet horn, which is kind of, sort of like a Magnavox horn speaker WAS used on some Edison Phonographs --

...but no HMV Gramophone, I'm aware of, ever came equipped from the factory with a cygnet horn exactly like the one Magnavox used.

Just wanted to set the record straight for what it's worth....

Joe,
I only went into one of their stores, once, as I found (IMHO) most of what they sell to be very poor (Made in China) products, with mostly incorrect descriptions---so this "error" does not surprise me in the least !

Restoration Hardware was the first place I saw the Crosley "Traveler" record player (re-branded, of course) for sale about 15 years ago.

Interestingly, the 2014 Holiday Catalog has some weird items such as reconditioned arcade pinball machines, and even a reconditioned ($7,000) Skee-Ball machine that takes up most of a room.

I think the company is going through an identity crisis. They have themselves confused with Hammacher Schlemmer. (By the way, for only $2-million, you too can be the proud owner of the Hammacher Schlemmer submarine sports car! -- http://www.hammacher.com/Product/Defaul ... catid=1746 )

Joe,
That's an OLD Skee-Ball--Notice the mechanical score board--I don't think they have made a mechanical style, since the late '60's, and the later ones, both with, and with-out electronic score boards, have the ability to have more then one player participate at once. (yea--I have "worked-on" a few of them--late '8o's versions). Ron Rich

I forgot to mention that they're still hocking Crosley record players.

Looks like a Crosley Traveler model with a ruggedized case. It will need it if it still uses the same el-cheapo,' Chinese-made, all-plastic gears and components fitted into the other Crosley models. (As noted in our Crosley post-string, the turntables don't even spin at the correct speeds!)

That crap from restoration hard-up is just..... an abomination.
Pure and simple garbage.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

Jeez Ronnie, if I wanna listen to garbage, I'd sooner set a dumpster of garbage on fire and listen to the crackling flames.
