Garrard set down incorrect

by montrose1504 » Mon Oct 26, 2009 5:27 pm

After cleaning and relubricating a Garrard 2025 TC, the changer now functions smoothly and the feeler arm senses both 10" and 12" records. However the tone arm sets down at a point about a half inch inside the record edge for both sizes. The tone arm will also return at the end of a record, and the changer will drop the next record on the stack properly, except at the end of the last record when the stylus stays in the leadout groove. Any solutions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

There is an adjustment screw on the right side of the tonearm, back behind the hinge, that sets the setdown point. It is the lower screw with the head pointing sideways. Does it also miss a 7" record by the same amount? Note that this adjustment affects all diameters equally, and also also affects the restpost landing position and the point where the trip sensor becomes active.

There is no reason why the last record should be different from the others. The trip device has nothing in common with the last record shutoff device.

The misadjusted setdown point could cause the trip mechanism to fail with a record that does not move the arm in very far toward the center at the end. The stylus must get within 2.5 inches of the spindle for the trip sensor to become active. It then trips when the arm speeds up as the stylus enters the runout groove.

It is also possible that the last record being played has no runoff groove, or the runoff groove has a very short travel inward. A record with no runout groove can not trip any changer except a Luxor. My copy of Hey Jude (original Beatles 45) has a very short runout groove travel. It will not trip a Garrard, but it trips an RCA RP-215, a V-M 1586, my Collaro Conquest, and my PE 2038B.

Also note a strange effect on those Garrards. if the power switch is off and the overarm is down, the arm will set at 7" if the changer is cycled while rotating the turntable by hand. The automatic shutoff device functions only when the power switch is on. When it is off, the linkages are not in the correct place for it to work.

Thanks for the solution, that fixed everything. The 10 and 12 inch setdown is now correct even when records are mixed, and the tone arm now returns properly for every record. I have no 45's to try but I assume it would also work correctly for them. It always amazes me that these turntables can sense different record sizes and set down properly, even when mixed. My Dual 1229 can't do that without setting a switch manually, although I only use that for 33's and will use the Garrard for 78's. A 78 stylus for the Shure V15/III on my Dual is either nonexistent or unaffordable.

That piece of plastic that looks like a seal flipper is the record size sensor. The falling record hits the sensor. A 12" record flips it all the way back. A 10" record just tips it, moving it back slightly. A 7" record does not touch it at all.

In my opinion, Dual made a mistake when it went to the size switch. Dual had automatic size sensing on the 1000, 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005, 1006, 1008, 1011, and 1013. The 1013 had the same tonearm the 1010 had, but for some reason, Dual never marketed it in the US.

The turntable in my avatar actually uses the tip of the tonearm to check the size of the records in the unplayed stack. It can play odd sizes. The Dual 1003, 1004, 1005, and 1006 could also play odd sizes. The Dual 1008, 1011, and 1013 used the same method your Garrard uses, but these had an extra feeler to feel a single record on the turntable with the short spindle installed.
