Magnavox stereo console question

by Hi-FiCurious » Sat Oct 19, 2013 4:47 am

Ive just inherited a vintage stereo console. It needs a new needle and cartridge but I don't know the model number.

It has a radio/8track player/turntable and it's in a cabinet that's really cute with kind of a speckled paint and red floral embellishments on the door that opens on the front of the cabinet (not a top lifting or top slider unit style)

I'm assuming 70's... So my question is. What kind of needle and replacement cartridge will I need? How much do they cost and is this a good system overall?. My buddy said to be sure the arm isnt too heavy. I dont know anything about that? Will it ruin my records to play on this? I want to keep it, if it's of good quality. Otherwise i want to sell it so what would be a reasonable asking price?
I've heard Magnavox is good, right? Can someone please help me, ANY info. At All would be MUCH appreciated!

WHEW! That's a LOT of ?'s- I hope you're still reading this. :-) thank you!

Thanks lots

The radio is on top. Eight track in the middle with little spots to hold 8 tracks on either side of it and a turntable that you can slide out on the very bottom!

Those 70's sets with 8 track wern't too special, nor bring a high price these days, but if you like it, fine.
As far as the needle replacement...
Putting brand new tires on a 40 year old unserviced car won't get you too far.
From my professional experience with those changers, they all by now need a good overhaul and drive system service.
Something only an experienced service tech can do properly.
Locate a reputable servicer in your area, and benefit from peace of mind.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

I agree with Matt, and understand a new needle, but how do you know that the cartridge is bad, or is the whole assembly missing? You've got fine wires running from the cartridge to RCA connections underneath the turntable, which in turn has cables running to the amp/receiver. Aged wiring takes a toll on these beasts along with all the semi-conductors.

Don't plan on retiring anytime soon after the sale of one of these units. I never paid more than $40 bucks for mine, in working condition. Two have built-in 8-tracks, while one has an external one which I believe was optional. Just guessing, but these units had something like a W714 to W716 series turntable or a W800 series.

Have it professionally serviced. A bad needle/cartridge may be just the tip of the iceberg with many underlying issues when dealing with these old vintage units. Sorry for the blurry pics from my cell phone. --BB
