Seeburg R Popularity meter solenoid

by BryanW » Mon Nov 18, 2013 4:15 am

This solenoid is staying in when I load a record (buzzing). I have to eject and stop play to get it to pop back out. I had this changer disassembled and redone about six months ago and it has worked fine since then except that it would do this about once every 50 plays. It would always fix itself after a few seconds but now it is constant. Can this solenoid be disconnected or is it necessary? Thanks for any advice, Bryan

Hi Bryan,
You can dis-connect it--HOWEVER, the fact that it remains energized, indicates that the cancel coil is also energized. The both receive power from the same source, at the same time--and the cancel coil will "melt" if this is not corrected. The adjustment of the "C"-"S/C" contacts is what controls this. This adjustment is perhaps the "most" critical on that phono. The coils must, and will have, a sharp, short pulse, when that adjustment is correct. I also recommend adding a 1/4 Amp SB fuse in series with the commons going to the coils. (contact points must, of course, be free of "pits", clean and dry !)
IF, per chance this is only happening on one side of the records, you have an "oil" problem in the mech--

Thanks Ron. Heres what I have found out. When I make a selection and the solenoid stays energized, I can gently press down on the short blade on the "C"-"S/C" contacts and then it will release. Ok til the next time, then sticks again. What are the steps I need to do to correct this?
