unbelievable that hardly any french collector knew what he was selling .By looking at the pictures I first thought it was a 202 but it's a 193 in perfect and complete condition.
It was worth the 6 hour trip to Paris...

I can't quite tell, from the photo, if the sound box matches. Either way, it's a great catch.

I have taken a clean HMV 5a apart today and brought the parts to a workshop that is going to
silverplate and oxidize the nickle parts (including screws)
I said not to put a varnish over the finish. So I can first clean some parts a bit with silvercleaner and reproduce the exact finish like the rest of the HMV193 oxidized parts.When done I will have the company put a varnish layer over it...
I will post a picture when finished in about 3 weeks.
So there's light in the tunnel of those who need the right 5a soundbox.
Can anyone be so kind to send me a picture of an original silverplated 5a soundbox?

My 202 also never came with the correct soundbox.

I did exactly what you've described, namely that I stripped ALL the original plating off, silver plated the metalwork and then oxidized only the parts I wanted (as the original) before clear lacquering all of it.

It has already "fooled" a few folks who have seen it but I would always point out that it had been refinished if i ever sold it.

The most satisfaction I got though was from the fact that I did it all myself as a complete D.I.Y. job!

Hello to Bert and "Unlucky" especially.

I have one of these 5a's for sale in silver oxidised finish. I know it is correct because I tried it on a friend's 193 recently and he confirmed that it was the right type and matched perfectly (I even took a photo of it showing it on the tone-arm to show how it matches the other finish too). The condition is very good without damage to the back part which is a common problem usually.

I have an EMG Mark 9 currently with the standard 2-spring soundbox but I am looking to collect all the different types of EMg in time, so if a trade / swap is available I might consider this option, otherwise it would have to be £100. Sorry!

Let me know anyone if interested and I'll email my pictures.

That soundbox looks absolutely fantastic - congratulations to the company who did the work on it - I'm sure you must be very pleased with it. It is impossible to tell it from an original one. Why bother buying an original one when professionals can do this sort of work to a standard one? One question I have though is how much did it cost you to turn a "standard" 5a into a silver oxidized one? Once again, great job and I'm sure it was worth all the effort and cost!

BTW John46, I notice you mention my name (?) above in a response to a previous poster - I do not know Richard so I imagine he must not know me either! I'm not therefore sure how he might sell you a soundbox by paying me? LOl! Hey, I don't mind taking anybody's money, folks, but just don't expect miracles. The UK is small but it isn't THAT small!

If I can help, I certainly will though.

I think I should let Bert refinish my 5a now!

The thing is that most 5a or 5b soundboxes crumble to pieces in your hand while trying to take them apart.
So if you ask how much it cost...35 euro's plus a lot of courage
The next thing is that it still has to be a good sounding soundbox.What's the use of having an oxidized one if all your other 5a's sound better on the 193.
In that I was lucky again, it sounds so good that even loud recorded parts on the record are reproduced with no disortion at all...

I have a proposition for you to make you love this hobby even more!

Ever thought about getting this company to refinish a batch of these 5a's just as you've had done in the picture above? You could always make a decent profit by putting them up for sale, surely, even on (dare I say) Ebay? I'd certainly buy one for sure as I reckon the one above looks a lot better than my attempt That company have done a good job to reproduce the correct shade of blue etc. When you're done with this one will you please post another picture?

You wouldn't even need to have a complete soundbox (although commercially that WOULD be important I suppose) as the only parts which are silver are the front bezzel and fascia. Even if you don't want to do anymore, I'd happily buy another one the same from you! You could get a little production line going there whilst their prices are still reasonable! Think about it......

Sorry John46 I didn't see your message until it was too late I've already agreed a sale of this now to Bert above!

A society friend reckons he knows where there is a 193 for scrap (parts only). Apparently it's been stored in a barn for over 30 years so the case is full of damp and rot. I wonder if the soundbox is still there? I'll definitely check and get back to you good folks.

Bert, I'll email you with my details when my wife gives me my PC back! The postage is all okay.
