Rock-Ola 464 Help

Hello,

I'm new to this and am looking for some help. I got a Rock-Ola model 464 a couple of weeks ago off of Craiglist from a local guy who's family used to run a business with coin operated machines. It was an awesome buy and I didn't want to pass my chance of getting a jukebox. But I knew it was going to need some work.

It looks complete. I did have to put the coin mechanism back into place and repair the power plug (it was missing the grounding pin on the plug). Once I did all that I decided to plug it in and see if it would power on; it does. The top light works and I can hear the the speakers have a little bit of white noise. The selection buttons on top seems to work and turn on the selection lights and it locks when the third digit is pressed. The coin mechanism works as I ran some qtrs through it and I can hear the credit box on the opposite end click. I then put the switch into scan to see if the record holder would spin but it doesn't. The turn table works but nothing else moves. At first I thought the motors may be seized up but I rotated the knurley thing on thier bottoms and they both are free. I don't want to force anything but I am at a loss as I am very new to this.

Do I need to start checking voltages? Is something not aligned or caught in a cycle that I need to reset? Where should I start to go from here?

Start by reading the Service Manual--- avail. at www.alwaysjukin.com, if you don't have one. Once you have done that, you can determine exactly where in the "cycle" the phono has stalled, and go from there --and we have a chance to "follow" and pass on suggestions, if we have them !

I have the service manual (now have two copies) and the parts catalog. I've looked through the troubleshooting manual as well and the others and I can't seem to figure out where this thing is caught. I turned the knurled end of the gripper motor and it moves and I noticed that when I moved the selector switch to scan it moved very slightly like it wanted to do it's job but something wasn't letting it. But the record holder still doesn't move when I have it in scan. I know that when I put the selector in play it eventually trips the breaker and I can keep doing that. I don't know if the mech breaker is working though. But when I used my non-contact voltage meter most of the parts I would think have power going to them do. Any thoughts?

If the "breaker trips", it is doing it's job (preventing a fire !)--which breaker is it ? You will need to determine where you have a "short"--or a motor that is "jammed". Ron Rich

Ron - it is tripping the mechanism breaker but only when I put it into operate. When I hold the switch in scan the turntable just keeps turning but I really don't hold it there for long. Having something jammed up is what I initially thought but I don't see where it could be jammed or seized. Reason I say that is when I turn the knurled end of the motor the record holder rotates, of course slowly but it does move. I keep thinking something is not getting voltage. Could the gear box for the selection motor, tiny little motor, be jammed enough to cause this?

The circuit breaker "trips" when something is attempting to draw to much power, not when it's open. Re-setting it over and over will cause a problem in most cases.
Where is the gripper arm ? Loosen the griper motor, pull it away from the gears and see if it turns. If so, the gripper is jammed. Ron Rich

Ok, so I took out the selector motor again and tried to clean it up a bit. Once I reinstalled it the selection started to work but then froze again so I think that it is still either gummed up or maybe a gear inside the gearbox is just bad. Also I kept messing with the microswitch cam in the back and I got the record holder to turn when I hit the scan switch, but the moment I went to play mode it seemed like the record gripper wanted to do something but then just stopped and the cam was maybe in the wrong spot so the record holder wouldn't spin again until I messed with the cam again. Will the gripper not work unless the selector is working properly? Thoughts?

Ron,

The gripper arm is over the record holder. I will take down the gripper motor tonight and see if it turns. I guess I will need to buy more wd-40.

Ron is correct, WD40, spray cleaners, contact cleaners only cause more issues.
My suggestion would be the strip the item down and clean any oil, grease or residual WD40 off and relube as per your manual.

Thanks, I didn't think it would be that bad but I won't use it again. Good thing is I only used it on that gear box for the selection motor. Problem is that gear box is basically sealed except for where the drive motor gear goes in. I'm not sure what kind of cleaner would be able to just "melt" the old lube so i could drain out that hole and put new in. Any suggestions on a non-caustic cleaner?

Hello Curtis,

Ron is the man re Rock-Ola's and Seeburg's I just deal in Rowe Ami, but cleaning on most jukeboxes is the same, when I used to go to sites years ago I always cleaned parts down with gin much to the publicans dismiss and cost.

If the gearbox is sealed and this seams to be where the problem lies then I suggest you start looking for a replacement part.

Thanks for the info. I'll start looking for a replacement and tonight I'll do what Ron had suggested and take the gripper motor away from the gear and see if it runs.

I'm glad that I'm finally getting somewhere with this, I so want to use it!
