Rock Ola 483, no sound from the bottom 2 bass speakers?

by br549autosales » Sat Apr 05, 2014 9:56 pm

I got this jukebox a couple months ago and the tone arm was in bad shape so I ordered another one from John Durfee and installed it. Everything is working fine except I am not getting any sound from the bottom 2 bass speakers. I pulled the wires from the 2 bottom speakers and hooked them up to the 2 top speakers and got more of a bass sound out of them, so I'm sure the wiring is fine. I can't see any visible damage to the bottom speakers, could it just be that these are just bad?

Thanks,

David

Hi David,
Did you purchase a Service Manual Package, for you model ? If so, there should be a wiring diagram to follow.
I would assume ( since I can't hear it) that your wires were dis-connected, or mis-connected somewhere. Did you check the speakers themselves, with a meter ? It's POSSIBLE that they are open---Caution--you do not want to be "moving wires around", as you can blow up the amp !!

Just checked the 2 bottom speakers with a multimeter and both are open

I have a service manual but I can't find out what type the bottom speakers are, I'm guessing that they are 12". The 2 top speakers are reading 7 ohms, so I guess they are 8 ohm speakers? Will the bottom ones most likely be 16 ohm? Would radio shack have these size speakers?

I'd suspect another problem, IF BOTH of these woofers are OPEN.
Highly unusal, to say the least.

Either the set was driven at max volume (abused) previously....
OR - a serious fault in the amplifier, causing DC current to flow into the speakers (a big no-no).
This would burn out any new speakers attached.
I'd check to MAKE SURE there is no DC on the speaker lines at idle (no music playing) before replacing the speakers.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

Does a 7 ohm reading sound correct for the top 2?

That would depend on how you are "reading" them, and the type of meter used---
I am totally un-familiar with the speaker set-up on that model RO--but I have seen others that had a plug for both the bottom speakers, and the flour. lamp in the same housing. "Somehow" these wires get crossed, and "blow" the speakers ?? You might want to check this ??
As for replacement speakers, I suggest you try, Bill, at MFFE, first, as he "specializes" in speakers. His contact info is above in the stickies--If he does not have the correct ones, or subs, he can tell you which ones will work, and probably the impeadence. Ron Rich

No DC current coming through the bottom 2 speaker lines, so they were possibly driven at max volume and were damaged.
