Miracord 16 and PE Rex

by Record-changer » Thu Mar 05, 2009 6:26 am

I have been researching some old units lately, and made some odd discoveries of units I had no knowledge of previously:

I just found out that Elac had a Miracord models 16, 160, 161, and 191 in 1961-1964 that work in a way similar to the 1967 and later Collaro changers (3-size arm scan). But it has some differences:

- Umbrella spindle
- Automatic single play using a single play size control (put it in the 7" position for changer use).
- Repeat play of a single record.
- The arm does not scan if the spindle is empty.

I never saw any of these advertised in the US.

-----

I also found some versions of the PE Rex changer that are different from the ones I have seen before:

One version has three extra controls:
- A control near the front of the turntable with four positions: M, 30, 25, and 17.
- Another control next to it on the left has a blank position and an R position.
- A control in front of the usual reject button with just 3 dots.

Another version has an extra control in front of the reject button with no markings at all.

A third version has three unmarked controls in front of the reject button.

Does anyone know what these extra controls do?

I'm still looking for the answer on the PE changers. I though that surely someone here would have one.

Thank you for your searching and for sharing with us some differences between them

I am still trying to find out what those controls DO. None of them are mentioned in any of my service manuals. In fact, none of them are present in any of my service manuals.

I have some thoughts on the possibilities of what those controls are, based on controls found on other changers I have (or have manuals on). But I have no evidence for any of them:

- A stereo-mono switch
- A filter switch for worn records
- Volume and tone controls for the record player (V-M, RCA, and Silvertone provided holes for these)
- A repeat control (Dual and Miracord - but repeat is hard to do with a PE-Rex)
- A single play record size control for use with the short spindle (30, 25, 17 - Philips AG series)
- A pause control (found on Thorens, Luxor, and Miracord changers)
- Manual turntable start and stop (PE 2038, Garrard)
- Full manual position (Collaro constellation)

If anyone knows, please post!

Here is a photo of the Miracord 161:

Note the size switch on the control assembly (the rightmost of three concentric levers). But it is used only for single play.

I still need to know what those extra controls on PE changers really did.

I now know what the extra control for this changer does. It is a filter control for worn records and 78s.

Hallo,

Hello,
as far as I know, were offered by ELAC three frames for the large Miracord.
The most common are the wooden frame as shown here or Kunststoffzarge (partly also particleboard) with hinged cover as shown here. It has shelves on the right side of the axles.
Less common is the frame with a side compartment.
