Magnavox Turntable Wiring

Hello,

I have a Magnavox/collaro changer from around 1959 that was originally in a suitcase portable. It's the first model to tap the side of the record and has the separate manual lever on/off, black tone arm with chrome on top of the tone arm with black stipes. The power cord that originally plugged into the amp is a three prong with yellow, red, and black wires. I want to hook up a power cord to be able to use this through my existing Scott 299D tube amp but want to make sure I do it correctly so that is why I am asking for one of the experts here the way to do it. There are three wires for the power:

One wire goes to just the switch. On mine, it is black.

One wire goes to both the switch and the motor. On mine it is yellow.

One wire goes to just the motor. On mine, it is red.

Connect the power cord short prong to the black wire.

Connect the power cord long prong to the red wire.

Connect the power cord ground prong (if 3-wire) to a screw on the chassis.

If an amplifier is to be switched by the changer, make sure it is 3 amps or under. Connect an outlet to the yellow and black wires, with the short prong on the yellow.

Look at a power cord, and you will notice that one prong of the plug is wider than the other. I called the wide prong long, because the slot in the outlet is longer.

If you aren't using the yellow wire, make sure you tape the end, to keep it from being exposed.

That's right. If the plug has identical prongs, which is which does not matter, unless the cord is marked for polarization. If there are ridges down one side of the wire, or if the exposed end of one wire is colored silver, that wire goes to the motor (red). This is an electrical code requirement in the US.

Do not use the yellow wire, unless you are using the record changer power switch to turn off the amplifier after the last record. Make sure it is insulated, so nobody can get a shock from it, because it is connected to the power wiring.

Thank you Record changer for all your previous replies and help with this. One question I do have is if there is any way to wire this so that the changer motor shuts off when you actually either manually turn the lever to off or it goes through it's auto cycle and at the end shuts up. The way it's connected now even though the switch is in the off position and the idler isn't engaged the motor still has power. I guess I could put an on off switch in line on the power cord or something similar but I would rather the changer shut off by itself. Again, the changer I am working with is exactly like yours with the yellow, red, and black wires. Look forward to hearing from you again and thank you...

Disregard my previous post of a few minutes ago. Upon looking at it I had used the yellow wire you mentioned not to use therefore the motor always had power. I have disconnected the yellow wire, isolated it and now the motor shuts off as it should. Thanks again for your help!!!
