Continental Record basket going slow

by Gordo » Sat Jun 25, 2011 5:26 am

Hi All,

I put the finishing touches to my Conti 1 a few months ago. Now the record basket does not turn at a contant speed.

It turns at normal speed and then slows down. Sometimes it stops and needs a helping hand to get going again.

It is like something is pushing against it. I have losened off the large rubber belt that goes around the records (it does look old), but no change.

I thought the motor may have issues, however it works properly about half the time. The record basket is not full at present.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Perhaps it needs lube (but where). I assume this machine has been sitting around unused for some time.

All help very much appreciated.

This may sound like a daft question.
Have you evenly spaced the records?
A full basket or even one with every other slot filled will be in balance, so there will be less resistance for the motor.

As Doghouse states--the basket MUST be in balance--also, of course, the bearings that it rides on must be oiled--and the motor should be serviced--
The belt need only be tight enough that it remains in place, and the wheels it rides on must turn freely (do not oil here). Ron Rich

Hi,

I removed all the records and loosened the belt. It ran well and much faster.

It seems that when the basket is under load it struggles. Also when it needs to move to the very next record, it often does not move at all.

You may be correct that the records are currently on one side, I'll try to spread them out.

How do I service the motor?

Thanks
