RCA Victor Stereo-Orthophonic Hi Fidelity Dual Amplifier

Curious about the dual needle configuration, which switches 78 and LP stylus from side to side.Do both needles track the record at the same time?
Surely this cannot be good for the records. What were they thinking?

I used to have one.

The selected stylus is pushed down by the pad on the cartridge element, while the other one lifts up by its own spring pressure. So only one stylus is in contact with the record.

If both of yours are touching the record at the same time, either the stylus assembly is inserted wrong, or it is damaged.
