Philco F1804

by JoeSeppRas » Thu Jan 01, 2009 9:06 pm

I am having trouble with my Philco F1804. I replaced the needle and the new one is skating off the record. Where can I make an adjustment? Also, I lubricated the phonograph and the platter still makes a grinding noise as it turns. The idler seems ok. If I turn the platter by hand there is a scraping sound. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I could make a video of the problem if anyone wants to see. Thanks so much. Happy New Year to all. Joe

Is this the Philco that uses the rebranded Webcor turntable? If it is, first clean and then relube your platter bearings. If that doesnt get rid of the noise, have the idler rebuilt. The idler on these may appear fine but may have hardened enough to make the sound as the platter is very thin on these and transfers ever little bit of noise the changer makes. Just about every Webcor turntable i've worked on that had that noise ended up being the idler. Revitalizing the rubber on the idler on these doesnt help in this instance as far as getting rid of the noise. Those who have owned Webcor changers know this particular noise all to well. As far as the skating problem, make sure you didnt buy a defective needle or that the shank is twisted in its mount. Alot of the replacement stylus out there now are not as good quality as the originals. If all turns out fine, check the stylus pressure spring at the rear of the tonearm as it might be set too light.

Tony,
Thanks so much for all the info. I have no clue if it's a Webcor. I have been searching for a manual. My Parents had a Webcor when I was a kid. The record spindle had alot of problems and they couldn't get a replacement, and the part that held the 45's gave us a shock once in a while. Still loved that machine. Anyway, I did try to revitalize the idler. I will go with a replacement and see what happens when I get it. Joe

I've attached files on here by clicking the upload attachment tab at the bottom of the page when you reply. After that its just like attaching a file to an email. If its a webor changer it should resemble the one like i'm attaching here which is a Philco branded Webcor changer.

To All,
I can see that it's a Webcor by that pic . Here is a photo.
Thanks, Joe

Several notes on that Webcor changer:

1. The center bearing of many Webcor turntables had a ball bearing with a Bakelite or fiber ball race. Those are easily broken in shipment. Then the pieces and balls escape the assembly and are lost. Now the turntable is too low, and is sitting on only the side plates. That makes noise. The later ones had a metal 3-ball race that could get damaged by crimping.

2. A Garrard center bearing also fits Webcor and Collaro turntables.

3. If the turntable is too low because the bearing broke, it scrapes on other parts. The needle also will not go down far enough to play the first record.

4. Note that a skating arm usually indicates that the stylus is broken off.
