Help with Wurlitzer 3400 Statesman

by pottsm6 » Thu Oct 11, 2012 6:35 am

Hi everyone,

I was hoping someone can answer a couple of questions for me? I've just bought a Wurlitzer 3400 Statesman and I am trying to get it to operate properly. I have got the service manual with it but I am not too sure if it operating properly.

When I plug it in and switch it on, the light come on and everything seems to look ok. Someone has obviously removed the coin register mechanism in the past as that is all missing and nothing is plugged into the coin mech plug. So with this in mind, when the Scan switch is in the 'Run' position and the Service Switch is in the 'On' position the jukebox start to play random records. After one is finished it will sometimes play the other side or sometimes select another record? Is this the correct operation?

The buttons A-Z 0-9 seem to operate mechanically ok but have no relation to which record is played? Does this seem right?

My next question will be, how easy is it to bypass the coin register mechanism to just allow the jukebox to always think it has credit but allow me to pick which records to play from the letters and numbers? Is it just a case of shorting out the inputs on pins 2-5 of the coin mech plug (as if was always pressing the key switch?)

Any help is appreciated.

Many thanks,
Matt P

Hi Matt,
I'll start with the last (easy ) one first--yes--shorting the plug that goes to the key switch will do it--If I remember correctly ( check the schematic!) shorting 3-8 lights the select lamp--
The rest is not SOP--something "crazy" is happening, that I'm afraid you just have to "check out". When all pins are in the non-selected state ("down"), the basket should not "pick-up" anything--If it's doing so, a read out switch is shorting or the actuator is catching on "something". It is normal to be able to start the scan with the service switch, and when returned to "normal" the basket should make two revolutions. This is a function of the scan control switch located ( hopefully) under a cover behind the basket. HTH Ron Rich
