AY-160 Doesn't scan!!! Help!!

by Shirts456 » Mon Jan 05, 2015 6:35 am

Firstly, let me say thanks to the powers that be for accepting me here... I had just purchased a 1961 Seeburg AY 160. it's a pretty machine, I can get it tp play by flicking the lower switch under the turntable and that's it. Carriage doesn't scan at all. I had it a couple of days and cannot figure it out.
Perhaps someone can help me to troubleshoot the problem, it's frustrating to not know what is causing this. The old owner said it just suddenly stopped scanning.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This place is great! Just reading the pages excites me.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Paul, if the turntable is rotating and the mech just 'sits 'n spins" but does not go from play mode to scan, the problem is usually the clutch assembly. This machine probably has not been properly oiled in eons. This eventually results in the clutch failing to shift from one mode to the next.

We can start with a lubrication chart: http://www.fileconvoy.com/dfl.php?id=g6 ... 27a21884c6

Use a 20wt non-detergent oil. Depending on where the mech is currently located it may be impossible to oil the clutch and other rear items. Try pressing down on the manual trip lever to get the mach back into scan mode and get it to the far right side where the clutch is exposed. The trip lever is a small handle right above the "clutch shifting and reset lever" as called out in the lower left diagram of the lube chart.

The bigger picture is that this machine is over 50 years old. The electronics --must-- be properly rebuilt now or attempts at continued use will eventually damage or destroy the transformers and other costly parts.

I suggest going to either of these two sites for a service manual:

http://www.victoryglass.com/manualsframe.htm
http://www.alwaysjukin.com/items/servic ... s/list.htm

Amp and control units (selection receiver) schematics here: http://www.verntisdale.com/Seeburgschem.htm He also sells capacitor kits for rebuilding the units.

Once you have a manual you can determine how much of this work you can accomplish vs. sending the units out.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but merely oiling the mechanism is only the first of many steps required to get an old machine running safely and reliably.

Thank you Rob, I will check it all out and let you know what I have accomplished. Oh and the previous owner had the amp rebuilt so I guess I'm safe in that department.

Okay Rob. No luck. Don't know what to try next. I ordered a troubleshooting manual from ebay. I really am at a loss as it is frustrating not knowing what to do,
