Seeburg M100C color wheel motor gear box

by steve_b10 » Mon Apr 30, 2012 11:58 pm

Hi Ron,
What lubrication is used in the original color wheel motor gear box and how much to add? It would hardly turn at all, even by hand, before I disassembled and cleaned it. The lube that was in there was black and thick. Shafts were all gummed up.

Also, I found a small flat washer in the bottom of the gear box after removing the worm shaft and all the gunk. Should that go on the end of the worm shaft where it enters the lower bearing?

Finally, there is a metal bracket that goes across the top of the motor rotor. There is a small gap between this bracket and the top of the rotor shaft. The underside of the bracket shows a wear mark from contact with the shaft tip. This was observed before disassembly so nothing was lost. Normally I might have expected a ball bearing to be between the bracket and the shaft. So is the fact that there is a gap between the bracket and the shaft normal? If the worm shaft has a downward thrust when rotating I don't understand how an upward wear mark is formed in the bracket.

Looking forward to your comments on these three issues.

Thanks for your continued help,
Steve.

Sorry Steve,
As I may have mentioned--there were several motors used in that system--I just do them one at a time-never paid too much attention to them--B;ack stuff" was probably graphite grease--which will "revive" if mixed with 20 wt oil---

Thanks for your response Ron. I was able to resolve the other questions I had in my initial post, and this is an FYI follow up.

-The color wheel motor assembly was manufactured by a company called Siemon Engin. Co. Once the gear box was cleaned the name could be seen embossed on the gear box housing. I'm sure this company has changed hands and products over the years (if it even still exists).

-The mystery washer that was found in the gear box had apparently been dropped in there some time ago and actually was one of two washers that held the top bearing compression spring in place. There was no attempt to retrieve it and a replacement washer was used to hold the spring. The washer did not belong on the worm shaft.

-The motor is a 120 V brushless AC motor. The small space between the the top of the shaft (where it comes through the rotor) and the underside of the top bracket is normal. The bracket prevents the worm shaft from winding back up the gear and from lower end of the shaft from coming out of the lower bearing.

-Following a thorough cleaning and lubrication the motor now functions properly.
