New LS1 owner, 45 vs. 33 1/3 question

I bought a Seeburg LS1, and finally have it up and running (I did what I could, but eventually had to call in some professional help). There's still a lot of cosmetic work I need to do but it's playing records!

My question is this. I have some new 45s with the small spindle hole, I see people saying that the LS1 can play 45s and 33s, and I've heard seeburg's can play records with the small spindle hole. How does this work? The service guy sad, No, only ever put in 45 with the large hole.

Can I play the 7inch 45s with a small hole without cutting the bigger hole, or does the small hole automatically switch it to 33 1/3.

I cant seem to make sense of the service manual to tell what I can put in there.



Follow up question. I have a 1 sided 45 with etching on side 2, can I turn off a selection for one side?

45's with the small center hole were europe issues.
They make a tool to pop the center out safely, in order to play on 1.5" American player spindles.
The mechanism "fingers" sense which "hole" is on the record, and shifts speed to 33 if it sees a small hole.

Yes, you can dis-able the 33 rpm speed unit, if it is installed--( you're "help" needs help !)
You can build a "jumper" per the schematic in the Service Manual, on the SCC schematic page.
Or, depending on which model SAS is installed, do one of two other things. Which model SAS is in that phono ?
As for the "etched" record--just don't play that side--there are no provisions for just removing one side of one record--

Alex, there are several approaches to make the mechanism stay at 45.

-On the mech there are a small set of contacts right under the opening for the clamp arm pilot that holds the record against the turntable. these contacts are opened when the clamp arm can travel fully into the t-t through the large hole in a 45, but remain closed when the clamp is held slightly further out in the case of a small hole record. When the are kept closed (for a 33) they complete the ckt for a relay in the speed unit that applies the oscillator and transfers the speed to 33. You can slightly bend them so they never close or unsolder one wire to keep the ckt from ever completing. There is an adjusting screw for these contacts but setting far enough inward might impede the clamp from being able to move fully inward toward the turntable.

-Or, in the speed unit you can remove one wire from the relay coil terminal so that this relay will never get power.

-You can make a jumper as per Ron's suggestion.

The suggestion to open one wire to the relay coil allows the easy incorporation of a switch so that if you ever have any 7" 33's they could be played without having to resolder the wire.

Remember to tape up the end of any wire you disconnect.

Depending on the version of the SAS installed, there are several easier ways to dis-able the speed change, and still have it totally reversible--either way. Ron Rich

I'll check which version SAS is in there. Adding a switch in the wire to the relay coil sounds like the way to go.
