GE300 portable phonograph

by TinkerV2 » Tue Feb 14, 2012 8:13 pm

I picked this up at a garage sale to preview records for my jukebox. It's a portable where the turntable folds down and the speakers hinge open on each side and can be removed. The only info I can find on it is a plackard saying "GE300", "Solid State Stereo". I can't find any other numbers on it anywhere. I'm looking for a replacement needle. The cartridge is made by Morse. Research says it's a ceramic cartridge with a flip needle. I'm not sure if it's original or not, though probably not. I've been to several sites searching for it. None have a "GE300" listed under GE models. I've tried searching thru pictures of cartridges and pictures of needles on those sites as well. I actually found and bought a needle that looked like mine but it didn't work. The way the needle was held on the cartridge was different. The seller swears he sent the right one even though it looks different the the picture he advertised. :(
Does anyone have a possible model number for the player or cartridge or needle??? :) I can add pictures of the player, cartridge and needle if it's helpful.

THANX!
Regards,

Photos of the cartridge/needle are helpful.
Also, usually a number on the cartridge body is good.
Most times a generic replacement cartridge can be fitted - something with the same properties.

Thanx for the response MattTech,

I've added a couple of pictures to aid in ID'ing the stylus. When I search for GE replacement needles, the closest pictures are GE-509 & GE-510. They are similar but different from mine. I don't want to assume the needle I have is correct. Possibly the 509 or 510 is correct for this cartridge. I can't find any numbers on the cartridge, just R & L for right & left channels and the Morse name as seen in the picture. I can't find any info on this cartridge or the manufacturer. I find similar needles on the websites listed here, but each company uses different numbers for their needles. Doesn't seem to be any standard. Several needles "look" like mine but must have suttle differences I can't distinguish from the pictures.

Any idea's? Outside of buying another cartridge and needle together.

It's a common generic cartridge - branded Morse, but in reality it's a Varco TN-4, used in millions of players.
Gary Stork's got the cartridges/needles for that.

He's at www.thevoiceofmusic.com

To MattTech,

Thanks again! :D
I will be ordering from Gary as you suggested. Out of the several websites I found, none were as inexpensive as his. I should be back in business soon.

I shall tip a cold one in your honor!

I want to Thank MattTech for the recommendation to use Gary Stork at "The Voice Of Music". I've come across a few unscrupulous sellers since I've been around. Gary is NOT one of them! He went out of his way to set my mind at ease with a recent order. He took time out on a SUNDAY to call me and let me know about my order. Only a top shelf A1 guy would do that. I recommend that if he has what you need, buy from him! He's an asset to our hobby and a great guy as well. I for one will do business with him again. Thanks gary and Thanks Matt!

Quite welcome.
