care for Edison Diamond Discs...

by Phonophan79 » Sun Mar 11, 2007 6:30 am

Greetings -

A few topics back I posted about an Edison LU-37. I got some DD's and its great! Orginally I had no DD's, so I had to e-bay for them.

My question is, what advice would you give on care for them? They seem pretty indestructable... but some do not have that orginal Edison sleeve. Will any sleeve be satisfactory? Can I keep them in the actual record storage space of the cabinet itself or should I not do that?

Thanks for your time.

Any paper covers should be alright, but you may have to make some. The thickness of DDs will often not allow them to go into most 78 covers. As your original covers will say- Only clean them with alcohol, and NEVER with water. Water will make the core of the record swell, and crack the layer of condensite which holds the recording.
I keep my records in the cabinet of my C19, But be careful! I scratched a couple records, because the dividers in my model are cardboard with a metal edge to strengthen them, which is then covered with leatherette over the metal. If these have been bent, the metal gets a kink in it, which then can scratch the surface pulling them in & out. I had to remove the dividers, and hammer the edges flat again to prevent this from happening, They are just fine now though. Some models used thin wooden slats for dividers, so i dont think you'd have this problem with them.

(J.M.J.) Howdy Shane,
I have 2 oak upright DDs phonographs. One of them has the problem of two bent dividers. How did you remove the dividers before hammering them straight?

I had to use a screw driver to gently lever the wood strip with the numbers out. There's 3 small nails which holds them in, so they come out pretty easily. I took all of my doviders out and hammered every one from both sides, and glued down all the lifting letherette, which can sometimes catch the edge of the paper labels and either tear them, or pull them off completely. You can just push the wood back in place when they're finished.
