NSM Galaxy 200 - Err060

Okay, so I'm stuck already!

I have just picked up this Galaxy 200 vinyl jukebox (with service manual). However, I seem to have a page missing.
In the trouble shouting section (3) of the manual there is a flow chart which refers the reader to an "Error-Chart", but I can't find the Error-Chart anywhere in the manual.
From what I can find on-line er.060 = no power to decoder or player check primary fuse, exchange decoder or pick-up driver.
Not sure where the primary fuse is and I don't know what the pick-up driver is.

Here's what is happening:
If the machine has been switched on with the mech positioned all the way to the right then you can make a selection and the mech will scan from right to left, pick-up the record and play it - great.
When the record is ejected the mech will continue scanning left, and hit the end of the carriage. It will make three clicking sounds as if the mech is trying to continue off the end of the carriage. At this point er.060 is displayed.
The only way to clear the error is to power off the jukebox.
The problem is that it just will not scan from left to right. If anyone knows which part switches the motor to run in the other direction it may help.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Keith I believe that your juke uses the ES III carriage. NSM had several production changes in their mid 80's units. Depending on the unit it will have a reversing switch on the right side of the carriage right behind the motors. There are 3 wires on a microswitch, check these to make sure that it changes continuity as the carriage stops at either end.
The other type of carriage uses a LED photosensor. It is located on the board on the bottom of the carriage.
To remove the carriage(it is real easy), look to the left side bottom. you will see a red plastic stop arm. rotate it out of the way and then you will see it was holding a spring loaded lever. there is a matching one on the other side(no lock on that one). Holding the carriage pull up on the releases, slightly lift up on your end of the carriage and pull it toward you. there is enough cable that it will come all the way out. you will see the board. clean the photosensors, if they cannot "see" it confuses the processor. there could be a total of 3 of them located at different places on the carriage doing different things. Clean them all.
When you have it out remove the board and carfully check all of the connectors for cold solder joints. Especially the flex cable that goes to the processor. check all the pins for continuity to there respective wire in the cable. This is a common problem in NSM
While you have it out, clean everything. the grease that was used 30 years ago will turn to tar and will give you all sorts of problems. if you get someting jammed up i found the best cleaner is laquer thinner(not on electronics), then sewing machine oil to lube things up. Hope this helps. Mark

I have had the mech off the carriage already looking for things.

Mine is the sensor type, but I have only seen one on there. I thought it my be working because the mech knows where to stop to pick-up the correct record when travelling from right to left. It also senses the change from the black to the silver strip under the records. When scanning the display shows each record number as the mech passes.

I will remove the mech again and check the continuity on everything as you have suggested and clean everything. I will also look for more sensors.

By-the-way according to the manual it has the ES IV carriage.

I have checked continuity on all the cables going to the carriage circuit board - everything checked okay.

I have tried to check, best I can, for any dry joints on the carriage circuit board and also checked visually for any burnt resistors etc.

I have noticed that the direction rely on the central circuit board clicks over okay when the carriage reaches the left side of the mech., but the motor doesn't change direction. I'm guessing this means the fault lays between the relay and the motor, but my electrical knowledge isn't sufficient to pin point the faulty component.

All suggestions welcome.

Just a guess, as I know nothing about NSM's--
If you hear the motor control relay "clicking over", that would indicate one of two things are failing. 1. The relay contacts would be my first guess, and 2. The motor itself, or wires going to it, are "open".

I can see the relay as it is easy to get to, and it looks like the contacts are touching okay (for both directions).

As for the wires to the motor being "open", I think that maybe it. I am assuming "closed" would mean the motor spins in one direction and "open" means it would spin in the opposite direction?

When the relay switches over the motor continues to spin in the same direction, as if there is a problem on the circuit between the relay and the motor - the phase of the motor windings not being switched as they should. The manual says:

"The motor is switched on with bridge transistors T514 and T517 for scanning direction for the A-side. These transistors are conducted through T518 which is triggered by R540 (complementary control).
With bridge transistors T514 and T517 switched off and T515 and T516 switched on the motor scans to the B-side, i.e. in the opposite direction."

I have identified all the components in the above paragraph from the manual, but I don't know how to test them, or whether they are significant.

I have noticed with the NSM's I have worked with that the joints on the bottom of the board don't look bad, possibly getting microcracks in them. In the past I have just gone and heated up the soldering iron and got them all. Just enough to remelt the solder.
Unfortunalty I am not very familiar with esIV. I and a friend each have a Prestige 2, and we are working on a 240-1. they are es II and III repectivly. There is somthing else to check. What is the main processor number? Several of these processors can be programmed for different numbers of records. There are 80 100(yours) and 120 record setting for the credit computer. I believe it is programing mode number p20 or p21. I hope you have the programming card. They use a 6502 computer processor and there are lots of possabilities.
Check ALL connectors in the box. Clean all pins. check all fuses for continuity they can be burned out and it is difficult to see it. There are none in the credit computer from what I remember. Does the counter show it counting all the numbers? Or does it blank out or stop at some point as the carriage is still moving? Hope this helps. Mark

I am going to resolder all the connections on the carriage circuit board. I just need to buy a new soldering iron. I will let you know how that goes in a week or two.

In the meantime, The processors are the Rockwell 6502 and a 6532.

It is P28 where you set the number of loaded records and that is set to 100.

I have checked all the fuses for continuity and they are okay.

Also, it seems to count all the numbers okay - I don't think it misses any. When the carriage gets to the far left and passes the first/last record (#100) the number changes to 3?? (three hundred and something). I assume this is the indication for it to switch direction, but it doesn't.

When I run the test programs I have noticed the following:

F6 - Test of Operating Switch BS (Opto Coupler)
Display 1 shows the switch state, the manual says 1=open, 2=closed, but I get 0 and 1, not 1 and 2.
When 0 shows, display 3 (which shows the time in ms that the switch was open/closed) shows 105-111. The manual says that the limits are 050-090.
When 1 shows, the speakers have a load buzz and nothing appears in display 3.
When the carriage reaches the far left side E0 is displayed. The manual shows E1 (switch does not open) and E2 (switch does not close) as errors.
If the program is using 0 and 1, instead of 1 and 2 then E0 could mean that the switch did not open.

F4 - Opto-test
This tests the opto scanning unit and it seems to work okay.

That will give you a clue as to if the reversing circutry is working or not. When i asked about the processor model i ment the 9 digit code on the outside. should start with 170 or 171. Mark

Just for completeness here is the solution to this particular problem, just in case someone has the same issue.

There is a trimmer (R557) on the back left-hand side of the carriage circuit board.

On my jukebox the trimmer was set to 12 o'clock and it was very stiff from years of being set in the same position.

This trimmer should be set to 11 o'clock and if yours is stuck, like mine, it just needs a few full turns in each direction to free it up.

Once I had freed the trimmer and reset it to 11 o'clock the jukebox worked like a charm.

Just amazes me how those little trimmer pots ( and all "adjustments"), can turn themselves !
I am beginning to suspect that there is a little "gremlin" that turns them all--even when glued down !
