Hi Bryan,
You can dis-connect it--HOWEVER, the fact that it remains energized, indicates that the cancel coil is also energized. The both receive power from the same source, at the same time--and the cancel coil will "melt" if this is not corrected. The adjustment of the "C"-"S/C" contacts is what controls this. This adjustment is perhaps the "most" critical on that phono. The coils must, and will have, a sharp, short pulse,when that adjustment is correct. I also recommend adding a 1/4 Amp SB fuse in series with the commons going to the coils. (contact points must, of course, be free of "pits", clean and dry !)
IF, per chance this is only happening on one side of the records, you have an "oil" problem in the mech--
