Should I buy a Seeburg s100?

by boneman91 » Thu May 22, 2014 6:02 am

I have a lead on a Seeburg S100 that "needs work," which I assume means non-functioning. I currently am struggling to get a Rowe R-74 functioning, but am enjoying the effort. One of the things Ive noticed is that the Seeburg brand has many more parts available for restoration, so I'd like to get one to work on. But my concern is that only about 400 of the S100's were made. If I buy one will I have difficulty finding replacement parts, or did this model use the same parts as some higher production models? Any buying advice would be greatly appreciated.

The S100 is being offered for $50, but I'll be spending a lot of capital with the wife, trying to squeeze a second "not yet functioning" jukebox into our house!!!

"Bone" The jet is a super-simple machine. Not particularly valuable and the sound system, from what I recall was only 12" (no tweeters).

They are 45 native- no speed unit. Aside from the transformer you could fit all the active parts in the control unit in your hand. They can be fitted with a stepper.

Other than the graphics, I can't think of anything in that machine that can't easily be repaired or sub'ed with other models.

There were 4 of those in locations I frequented here in Manhattan in the late 60's. As I mentioned there were no tweeters which was a shame because the new pickup used in the SS160 was here too. AS a result the machines were a bit bass-heavy. I'd consider adding a tweeter.

The main advantage this model has is in compactness, this may help in resale.

Fifty dollars for one with intact cabinet and as-is internals is a good price.

I hepled someone fix one of those and i bought one and restored it . Later sold it for 700$ . Overall a very good sounding little machine . What i did to help the no tweeter problem was to install a couple capacitors on the volume control which boosted trebble on the first half of the controls range then it sounded much better .
The only thing that could be a problem was the credit unit . I believe it is unique to that model and has plastic parts in it . The one i helped a guy fix had a missing part in it and he had a hard time finding one ( this was before ebay though )
The other thing i noticed in that credit unit was the strange unique motor that ran the cam wheels in it . Mine made a awfull buzzing noise when making selections . I took the motor apart to fix the noise and found out its not a motor , its a goofy vibrating gadget . After years of use it was worn enough to make the loud annoying buzz and no way to fix it .
If i remember right that unit must be in there to work , no bypassing it . I tried everything to bypass with no luck .

Well, I was two days too late in answering the post. Missed out. Not available. I'll keep looking for a good starter project though. Thanks for everybody's input.

OK, but, "ken G" above mentions a point that I had forgotten about; that is the special credit unit-service sw.

Is this a particular model you want, or is more a matter of a compact machine? There might be other suggestions.

Actually, I already have a restoration project as my first jukebox, a Rowe R-74 that I have been tinkering with. I've cleaned it up, removed the rat's nest and mold, and am now trying to get the thing working. I just stumbled on a craig's listing for the Seeburg s100 at a great price ($50) and thought I could talk my wife into letting me bring another project into the house. I think my marriage was saved by the fact the guy already sold it. I do like the idea that it is pretty compact, but I can wait until I get my Rowe functioning before I go after another machine.
