Need Turntable Advise For 16rpm Records

by Doc » Tue Feb 21, 2012 1:52 am

I'm trying to convert all of my Seeburg Background Music records (I have over 500) to CD for archive purposes. My question to the forum is what would be the best choice in a turntable for doing this? I need something that can play at 16 2/3 rpm. Dumping them onto a CD is the easy part...Any tips/tutorials/ideas on how to start doing this? Maybe a source for a decent turntable? TIA

You'll want a turntable with low rumble/flutter - a heavy platter and good drive system is best.
Something serviced properly and recently.
Most record changers are not "hi-fi" quality, but some are substantially better than others.
Garrards, particuarly the mid-grade 4-speed units are a decent choice.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

You also need a .5 mil stylus tracking at light weight to not damage these records. You really need a magnetic cartridge for playing these tracking at no more than 3 grams. And the .5 mil stylus. Otherwise, you'll damage the grooves.

I would suggest a Shure M44-5 pickup, because it has the.5 mil stylus. You might be able to find it old stock. Any M44 or M55 pickup with the N44-5 stylus inserted is the same. My Collaro TSC-640 with the M44-E would work fine. I have an N44-5 stylus I use for the long playing Edison records.

Anther problem is the size of the center hole. I made a single-play spindle for a few rare 78s I have (and some recording blanks) with 1/2" center holes. I turned down a plastic knob with a 1/4" shaft hole on a lathe.

A similar device could be made for these large holes with wood and a drill press with a circle cutter installed.

A hole saw might work, but it is set for the outside cut diameter (the hole), not the inside diameter (the wood plug).
