Your describing something similar to what I have which dates around 1973-74. It's VERY heavy and is made out of some type of pressed wood, and probably has a W716 or similar turntable. The 8-track has a 2/4 channel decoder thingie on it.

Oops, I take that back. Mine is NOT an Astro-Sonic, but it has big bullet-shaped foam enclosures. For the Astro-Sonics I do have, there are little date stickers on the amp/radio chasis like "9/65" (September 1965) and such. There may be a sticker on the underside of your turntable to tell you what model it is. None of my Astro-Sonics have the foam enclosures and I don't remember what year they started using them.

I used to have a large collection of all those color brochures when I was a kid and remember seeing cube-shaped enclosures, don't remember the round ones. I wouldn't mine having an Astro-Sonic with those enclosures just to compare with what I already have.

Sorry that I can't help with your speaker project, but Michael Sutherland(sp) has a HUGE collection of Maggies and may chime in if he's around. Record Changer is also VERY, VERY knowledgeable, too, with his decades of experence.

Best of Luck to you and Happy Holidays!

Hey Justin,
I couldn't view your pics because the site wanted me to register/subscribe. What is that AudioKarma website anyway? I may join.

As far as cold, it has gotten as low as 25 degrees, no snow unless you live up in the mountains, just some frost on the windshield in the mornings. --BB

They dont look down on ya if you dont have a very expensive system, they praise ya for keeping the hobby up! more audiophiles there than any other site ive been to! constant ask and learn, no right or wrong, you dont always get a responce, but someone always does. you just have to join its great. i joined here a while back just forgot my username and password, and i can see that there is knowledge here as well. i just like the hobby and will have it around for years, i consider my self an audiophile and not a blastophile.. hope you all have good new year and god bless... justin :!:

Justin, The speakers in the unit you have were also used in Magnavox auxillary speaker model# S-8754 The wooden cabinet demension are
H-19 1/2 W-12 1/2 D-11 inches. These will sound better than mounted in the foam. Use 3/4 plywood and use these demensions and you will get a smooth sounding speaker system. (BTW THANKS, BOBBY FOR MENTIONING ME I HAVE 61 UNITS NOW LOL) Justin, my fascination began with the same cabinet that you have in 1971 when I begged for that unit. i HAD 2 MORE NOT SO GOOD UNITS THAT I TOOK, CUT AND MADE MATCHING SPEAKER CABINETS TO USE FOR EXTERNAL SPEAKERS WITH THAT UNIT. Very COOL.

Justin:

Years ago, your first consideration might have been console stereo. A fine piece of traditional furniture that housed all the essential components to indulge your listening pleasures. But today, your tastes have changed. Your lifestyle isn't what it would have been years ago. And your ear for good music is much more refined. Just a suggestion, you can dismantle your Magnavox stereo from the console and rearrange the components vertically or horizontally in a cabinet / or in a shelf. This arrangement will give you lot of space.
