ROWE CD100 backup battery in CCC

by gtc » Sun Oct 11, 2015 2:37 pm

According to my service manual's parts list, the CCC backup battery is given as Lithium 750mAh 3V (#40788901)

750mAh is a quite a high capacity battery. Just wondering if that's a typo, or did Rowe in fact originally install 750mAh batteries?

Googling around I note that many recommend CR2032 (220mAh) as a replacement.

Which type battery is installed in your CCC ?--Rowe used two types--originally it was a "conventional shaped" type, which they quickly changed to the button type-- It is not critical-- I have replaced them with any 3 volt, or higher, button type I can get--I install a clip type holder. One would probably need to look at a later schematic/parts list, for the exact replacement-- Ron Rich

I haven't opened up my CCC as yet. Bit concerned about breaking those plugs in the attempt.

I note that the later model CD100A service manual states "750mAh 3V (#40788901) OR 160mAh 3V (#30873101)", so that may the changeover you mention.

Yep--that's probably the change-over--like I said--very "noncritical"--
Plugs won't break-pull them evenly--by the "PLASTIC"--Solder joints on the headers should be inspected for "hairline" cracks/cold (dry) solders.

The plug headers sit below the case of the CCC so I guess I'll need to pull them with needle nose pliers. My concern is that the 25+ year old plastic may be brittle.

I agree with Ron, I have had no problems on these plugs, the main thing is to not pull on the cables, just pul on the plastic plug.
A pair of long nose or tweezers should do, I tend to pull them out with my fingers.

With regards to battery check the voltage, if it is below 3 volts replace it, I tend to fit the disk type battery holders and then put in a disk cell.

Hi Alan,
Just curious--how many CCC's have you seen of the early type, that had the "flash-lite" (torch, to you) type of battery, mounted at the very top of the PCB, rather then the disc type, mounted on the left side ? Ron Rich

Hi Ron,

I do not think I have not seen any of those, we have come across quite early boards with the smaller DIL socket for the early program chips, but the batteries have been the disk type (with solder legs) or they have been the tubular type again with solder tags. These however have been in a similar location on the boards.

Hi Alan,
I only have seen a couple--totally different board lay-out, and much darker "green" color, as if done by a different board house--I can't re-call, but it seems like I converted the DIL socket, and chip, on these, with no problems-- Ron Rich

Hi Ron,

I just added a the extra DIL connections by ctting down a DIL socket, it saved unsoldering the rest and the tracks on these boards are very small & double sided.
