Fixing Coin Register mechanism Wurlitzer 2000

My Wurlitzer 2000, that I want to restore to a complete state (working on coins), had a faulty coin register mechanism.

After examining the piece, I figured that the magnetic copper coils were missing (wires cut).
After ordering a copy for parts on ebay, with lots of parts missing but the coils intact, I started a resurrection...

After surgery...




I choose to cut the 3 wires (pink, orange, black) of the coils on the spare part piece. Since I think this is the only piece missing in mine.
I have reconnected said loose wires (pink, orange, black) with a screw terminal like this one:


So I plugged everything back in.... but the gear is not moving.
Any thoughts ? Is it possible that the mechanism is somehow alternatively set to freeplay prohibiting the gear from moving ?

I can shift the gear manually and it does seem all parts are now complete.

It sounds as if there is no power to the coils, r the coils are all "bad"----are the coin switches plugged in-wired ? Is the fuse good AND the correct size/type ? Are all coils connected to the "common hot" ?
It's a very simple circuit--all coils have the voltage on them at all times, each one is connected to the ground source via the dedicated coin switch, when closed, for that coil. Ron Rich

I took some additional pictures and reconnected the wires, just in case.

The fuse is this one, orderd from this retailer, as advised on this forum earlier this year:

However, I recovered a fuse in the spare parts credit unit, and they look very different...
Left is the fuse that came out of the Coin Credit unit, Right one is the one that I ordered from the above website...


Either the left one was not the correct fuse to begin with, or they look different nowadays ?

When I remove the fuse, the metal exiting the casing tends to move a bit, but the fusetron fits with the "twist" knob.

All three red cables run to the "ground" as we say it or the "common hot"





And finally after using the screw terminal to connect the wires, I didn't want to solder just yet.

OK, a great breakthrough !

I opened the coin mechanism again, set the plays for both the "half dollar or dime" and "quarter" wheel to three plays, closed the system, and switched on the jukebox.
And played three songs, waiting for the "select" light at the front to go out.

The "select" light in the front keeps burning, and sure enough you can select and play more than the three song limit I set.
This had me thinking that the coils or something inside wasn't working correctly.

However when I opened the coin mechanism again, I was amazed to see that the "half dollar or dime" wheel was in it's end position.
I reset the thing again, and indeed I can hear the coin mechanism making a profound CLICK noise, making the gear wheel move one position further with each play.

However, since this doesn't stop me from playing more songs than my selected plays, the coin unit is somehow still set to freeplay.

I did notice that the "quarter" gear wheel, is not moving at all like the half dollar wheel, it needs a manual touch
The half dollar wheel clearly has a spring load making it move, the quarter wheel has a spring, but the spring is not making the gear move
as quickly as it should.
Instead it releases the wheel, but let's it "loose" so to speak.

Might this be the case on why I can keep selecting songs, even though the half dollar wheel has reached it's final point ?
hopefully the attached photos can make a few things clearer, but I fear I will have to reopen the mechanism again to pinpoint the exact problem...

But, I'm happy I got it working this far !

Do you have the Service Manual ? If so there should be a photo of the Playrac in it showing the position of the large spring that goes around the gear wheel. I THINK, judging from your photo, that someone has wrapped it around the other side--a common practice when one wishes to set those on "free play".
FUSE size and type should be marked on the Playrac, next to the fuse post--I can not read what sizes the fuses you photo'ed are--looks like the one on the left is a "fast blowing" type, while the one on the right maybe a "sloblo" type --fuses are marked on the metal--what do they say ? NEVER,ever, replace a fuse with a larger size/type !! Ron Rich

Yet another problem solved, replaced with a new one

The quarter wheel was only moving up to the fifth gear "tooth", where it got held back.
Upon inspecting the springs a bit closer, I could clearly see that they were NOT the same.
The quarter wheel spring was way shorter, hence helding the gear back causing it to jam.

I replaced the spring with one from the spare coin mechanism (luckily those were still there) and the jam was gone.
The gear is now moving swiftly past the "5 plays" barrier.

So I thought this would be the end of it, but alas !
Free play is still enabled, the sign is still lit on the front

Now I noticed that on the black gear, the "actuator" (white little know) is not touching the "key switch opening" (the tweezer thingie).
Might adjusting the "adjusting screws" so it touches the "actuator" be the resolve to this matter ?

Once again, Do you have the Service Manual ?? If so adjust the key switch as per the manual,and your Playrac problems will end.
