Westinghouse amp help

Bought this working stereo at a flea market for $10 and I'm in the process of refinishing the cabinet, but this stereo has a few issues like the left side plays louder than the right...have yet to de-ox the pots and that is all I know to due...I know if I'm going to get into restoring old stereo's I'll need to buy some test equipment but I have no idea what to buy and how to use it but I want to learn....I do know I don't want to start a house fire. any help/advice would be greatly appericated. We have a radio store Randolph-Williams in town and also a radio shack. the stereo is model hf 1020
