AMI Model C Convert back to 78

by rvalkenburg » Fri Jan 15, 2016 2:15 am

Well it has been a while since I have been on the forum, took a break from juke projects and have been doing a ton of video game restores until I picked up my latest project, the AMI Model C.

Currently it is configured with a 45 cam but still has the original 78 tonearm. Here is my question, when these units were converted to 45's from 78's what came in the actual kit for the operator to make this change?

-Turntable with 45 core mount
- 45 "S" shaped tone arm
- 45 cam
- 45 insert rings

Just want to make sure i am not missing anything stupid, yes I have the manual but does not go into the conversion at all. I have a 78 cam and a 78 turntable, does anything need to be removed, modified or adjusted to the motor?

Hi Ron,
Well, I would think you will need to find an "old-timer" who still remembers doing these conversions-I ain't "old enough", to have done one-OR, maybe--don't know if the "conversions" were AMi made or aftermarket items, but, you might try the AMi Docs for both the 45 and 78 models--part number differences, SHOULD tell you what you need to know ?? Well what I have found out is that the kits to convert the AMI C from 78 to 45's was an AMI produced kit for the operators to be able to quickly upgrade the unit instead of replacing it with a machine that could play 45's natively.

As for parts, the biggest part change was the Cam. Apparently from what I have been able to find is the part numbers are the same, the operator would need to know the Cam shape difference, most would engrave a 78 & 45 into the casting. The attached photo shows the blue one being the 78 Cam and the red one the 45, maybe this will help others down the road.

I found the procedure doc for the 78 to 45 conversion of the AMI Model C unit. It describes in detail what needs to change to the unit to play 45's and would need to backtrack to restore it back to playing 78's.
