Dirtiest Seeburg SMC1 ever ?

by Kenneth Somers » Tue Dec 16, 2014 11:06 am

Who can advise how, and with what to wash / clean the SMC1 mechanism ?
I inherited an SMC1 from my father, which was in his possession for 30 years. All this period it stood in a smoke infested place, without ever being serviced. Miraculously it still worked, being in this condition. Though sometimes took wrong selections. And if sled came from left side it could only play a sides, and coming from the right only b sides....

I plan to buy the new MCU from Ron, and also his repair guide after the holidays . And of course all needed spares. ( motor coupling is also twisted ...)
Now I only have the parts catalogue.
But I would like to start cleaning it already.
Can the mech being cleaned / washed without taking it apart completely ? Only taking of the electric parts ?

All other tips and tricks are welcome of course also.

Here some pictures
Kind regards
Kenneth

Hi Kenneth,
That sure does not look "dirty" to me !! I have seen much "dirtier" Seeburg mechanisms--
Since you plan to purchase the "Seeburg Mechanism Guide", I strongly suggest that you do so, PRIOR to washing it, as I have described how I do it in the guide. PM me, or contact me at: ronnnrich@yahoo.com when you want to purchase the items--
Your "side playing" problem could be either in the MCU, or the Inter Face Board (IFB) in the Phono Control Center (PCC).

Hi Ron, comforting to hear you have seen worse. I guess that means this one can be made as brand new... Amazing how these things manage to keep working under these conditions though...

I plan to purchase your guide and some parts ( rubbers, coupler ... ) at Stamann in Germany. If I start working on it, better to change as much worn parts as possible. ... But they are closed till 10/01 .

After the holidays i'll also mail you concerning purchasing the new MCU.
Don't worry, I was not planning to wash the mech, without knowing how. I'll keep myself to clean the cabinet, and repaint the speaker cover for the moment. 8)

PS : Any idea about the force ( N ) of the gas springs of the lid ? Looking for replacement, but no idea which resistance they have ... Seems to be a big secret, as it is nowhere mentioned.....

And a merry Christmas and happy New Year to all reading !

Hi Ron
Closed till 10/01/2015... you would write 01/10/2015 I guess. Till the 10th of January anyway
Forgot that we have a different ( a more logical...... ) way of writing dates in Belgium than in the USA .

OK, i'll check. thanks
Don't know all of the post / topics yet. But they will sure come in handy in due time.

Hi Kenneth,
I realized the date difference as soon as I hit the "send button"--but I do dis-agree about that being, "more logical--"
