Hello again, Preston. The first issue id simply wear in the catch and slider contacts. When you take the switches out you'll see that the slider backs out too much and the contacts lose touch. Sometimes the stationary contacts can be -slightly- bet to stay in contact, but most often I have to make a new phenolic & slider out of parts I luckily bough back in the '80's. These drum assemblies are a real PITA in commercial service.
You are right about the AC relay. The wiring of it is simple. Disconnect the source going to the motor and attach it to the relay. then connect the contacts on the relay to the Low-AC source. The switches and cam contacts now operate only the relay at about 30ma vs. 3.2 amps. All the sources and connection are done at the motor area of the drum assembly. If you don't have the wiring schematic of that area, I'll look around for mine and scan it in.
