Pay to Play

by aloneinthewoods » Thu Aug 28, 2014 4:21 pm

Hello. After I got my Rock-Ola successfully moved (see previous post), I cleaned it up, recapped the amplifier, and had the old Astatic cartridge rebuilt. It now sounds far better and much louder that it has in my lifetime. My next and probably last project is to return it to coin play. After spending its early life playing polka music in a diner, it was converted to free play in the late 50’s. I do not really know where to start, anybody know what methods were used to achieve free play on this machine?

What you will need to do is read the service manual, figure out how the pricing unit should work, and reverse what-ever was done. You should start with the "slug rejector", if a drop type unit, it will need to be washed in hot soapy water, rinsed, and totally dry before you attempt to run coins thru it. Also, check the coin switch operation. Ron Rich
